Job Description

The Center for Sustainable Systems has a full-time summer internship position (up to 40 hours per week; max 29 if enrolled in classes) available for a graduate student in Sustainability, Engineering or a related field to update our Sustainability Factsheet Collection (see the collection at css.umich.edu/publications/factsheets). This Factsheet Collection is a premier resource we offer as a public service, downloaded by more than half a million visitors each year. Users include journalists, teachers and students, businesses, and other members of the public seeking peer-reviewed, factual introductions to sustainability issues across systems from energy to mobility, water and food, and more.

 

Job Duties:

  • Update our current suite of 32 Factsheets on the sustainability of systems that meet human needs by conducting research to gather data on the current patterns of use, environmental impacts and sustainable alternatives.
  • Help conceptualize and create new dynamic, interactive updates for the Factsheets, such as short videos, interactive graphics, or other media/content.
Educational Value

Students will learn research skills, communication skills, organization, and other professional skills. They will also learn about the specific sustainability topics / systems they are researching, such as energy systems, mobility systems, carbon footprint and greenhouses gases, and many more.

Job Requirements

Required:

  • Graduate standing in the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), College of Engineering, or a related program (or dual degree) with demonstrated interest and expertise in sustainability.
  • Well organized, with close attention to detail and ability to plan and manage time effectively. 
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Completion of Industrial Ecology course (EAS557/CEE586) is highly desirable.
  • Prior database, spreadsheet, and Adobe InDesign experience are desired.
