Graduate Assistant Position Description

The Graduate Assistant will have supervision responsibilities over the sophomore Peer Mentors. The Graduate Assistant will also serve as coordinator of the undergraduate Recruitment Team, assist with the implementation of the WISE RP Passport to Success, and lead special projects as assigned.

Peer Mentor Supervision: There are 26 sophomore students in the WISE RP who serve as Peer Mentors. Each first-year student is paired with a mentor during the academic year. The Peer Mentors are responsible for creating transformative relationships and interactive activities with their mentees and the community at-large. The Graduate Assistant will have primary supervision with the Peer Mentors and will ensure that Peer Mentors are sharing appropriate resources with the first-year students and initiating meaningful contact each week outside of required community events. Peer mentors are expected to be an active, engaged and responsible ambassador throughout their time in the Peer Mentor role. The Graduate Assistant will meet individually with all Peer Mentors at least once per month as they plan appropriate and inclusive programming that fulfills community needs and learning outcomes.

Recruitment Team Supervision: The Graduate Assistant will select, train and supervise a team of 10-12 WISE RP students in the Winter Term who serve on the WISE RP Recruitment Team. These students serve as informative and positive ambassadors of our program with potential students, parents and campus community members. Recruitment Team members serve as an integral touchpoint for encouraging students to apply for the WISE RP at University of Michigan Campus Days, virtual meet-ups with interested students, and other opportunities that present themselves throughout the year.

WISE RP “Passport to Success” Support: WISE RP develops, implements and assesses a series of workshops, panels, speakers and other touch points for all WISE RP participants that are essential to personal and professional growth and development throughout the academic year. The Graduate Assistant will assist the WISE RP Associate Director with the planning and logistical needs of the program, and will be encouraged to share their own skills, knowledge and experiences through presentations and other engagement through the passport framework.

Additional Responsibilities: Attend weekly WISE RP professional team meetings. Meet with supervisor once per week. Working as part of a close-knit team, the Graduate Assistant is encouraged to offer ideas and suggestions that would contribute to the development of the WISE RP.

Program Description:
The Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program (WISE RP) is an academically supportive living-learning community for first-year students who are interested in academic majors and careers in the sciences, mathematics, engineering and/or pre-health. WISE RP students live together on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Mosher Jordan Residence Hall and have an abundance of academic and social opportunities available to them. All first-year students take a one-credit course each semester (ALA 107 and ALA 108). Both courses introduce students to the opportunities and challenges gender-minoritized individuals face in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. We assist in students’ transition to the university by providing social activities, career development programs, community service, and programming opportunities. Each first-year student is paired with a Peer Mentor and is encouraged to participate in the WISE RP facilitated study groups.

Program Tenets:
The curricular and co-curricular elements of the WISE RP are grounded by three guiding tenets: identity in a STEM context, cultivating STEM Self-Efficacy, and developing critical leadership skills. These tenets are integrated in and inform all of WISE RP programmatic and academic initiatives.

  1. Identity in a STEM context - In order to be successful in anything--college, a career, life in general--one must have a clear understanding of self; Through curricular and co-curricular engagement, students will learn how to critically examine their social location (i.e., the groups people belong to because of their position in history and society; often characterized by gender, race, social class, age, ability, religion, sexual orientation, and geographic location--the intersections of social identity, context, and power), personal values, and lived experiences and begin to explore how these nuances inform and shape their experiences as gender-minoritized individuals in STEM.
  2. Cultivating critical leadership - With identities and contexts centered, students will interrogate their perceptions and understanding of leadership. Students will cultivate their leadership skill sets and capacities and discover what lenses and abilities are important for leadership and how to practice leadership in a variety of disciplines, contexts, and settings.
  3. Building STEM efficacy - Focuses on cultivating students' belief in their abilities and capacity to engage in STEM (i.e., STEM self-efficacy). Students will develop an internal appreciation and self-conviction in their own influence, power, agency, and capacity for STEM.
Job Requirements

Desired Qualifications: Because the WISE RP is primarily a first-year transitional program for students in science/engineering, knowledge of college transitional issues, student development theory, and issues facing gender-minoritized students in science, technology, engineering, and math would be beneficial. A desire to work closely with traditional-aged college students in a residence hall setting is a must.

The ability to take initiative and work autonomously is required.
