Job Description

 K-12 Lesson Plan Developer for Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, Education Department is seeking a passionate and experienced Graduate Student to join our team this summer 2025 as we develop engaging and educational lesson plans for five faculty research projects. The broad outlines of the K-12 projects have been identified, but we seek help in writing lesson plans for each of the five archaeological field projects, designing the lesson activities, and liaising with faculty and staff involved in this effort (including UM faculty, Museum staff, collections database staff and interns of the DiSKO Project, our Teachers Advisory Group, and others). 

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in education and curriculum development, with an interest or experience in museum studies, archaeology, anthropology, history, or science.

 
Educational Value

This position will allow students the opportunity to excel in tranferrable skill set by participating in the following:

 

  • Collaborate with Kelsey Museum educators and UM faculty to design interactive and informative lesson plans aligned with the Klinsky K-12(see description below) education research projects. 
  • Develop lesson plans that cater to a diverse range of students, considering different learning styles and abilities.

  • Ensure lesson plans meet local and national educational standards and frameworks.

  • Incorporate inquiry-based learning and hands-on activities to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

  • Work with the museum education team to integrate digital resources and technology into lesson plans where applicable.

  • Conduct pilot testing of lesson plans in educational settings and collect feedback for continuous improvement with the Kelsey Museum Teachers Advisory Group.

The Klinsky Expeditions

The Klinsky Expeditions are a series of five archaeological field projects funded by a generous gift from businessman and University of Michigan alum Steve Klinsky. Stretching across Africa, Asia, and North America, these projects are led by LSA faculty from U-M’s two archaeology museums—the Kelsey and the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology.

Per the donors intent, each project also features a K-12 educational component.

 

Job Requirements
  • Currently/recently enrolled in a graduate program in Education (preferred), Museum Studies, Archaeology, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or teaching.

  • Strong understanding of educational standards and frameworks. 

  • Excellent research, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Creativity and an enthusiasm for innovative and engaging educational practices.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and independently when needed.

  • Familiarity with educational technologies and digital tools is a plus.

  • Passion for museums and informal learning environments is highly desirable.

Hourly Rate $20.00/hour to $22.00/hour

The Kelsey Museum supports teaching and research on Mediterranean, North African, and Middle Eastern archaeology through stewardship of its rich collections, an active exhibitions program, and sponsorship of ongoing field research. The Kelsey houses a collection of more than 100,000 artifacts, of which approximately 1,500 are on permanent display, and mounts special exhibitions each year. As a museum at a public university, the Kelsey embraces a vigorous public outreach mission, engaging with local residents and visitors of all ages, from kindergarten through retirement. It also serves as the headquarters of the University of Michigan’s graduate program in ancient Mediterranean art and archaeology.
