Job Description

The College of Engineering Honors and Engagement Programs Office is seeking an Engineering Honors Academic Advising Program Assistant. The ideal candidate should be available for approximately 15-20 hours/week. This position pays $22/hour and offers opportunities in student development and academic advising with STEM students. The Engineering Honors Academic Advising Program Assistant will be assigned a caseload of students to work with, alongside the Engineering Honors Academic Advisor & Records Specialist. The Program Assistant will also work alongside the Program Manager to help supervise and provide training and resources to our undergraduate Peer Advisors. Projects will include:
  • Academic Advising – Meet with students to discuss focus areas, select minors, and guide them through the process of developing a capstone project. Ensure all Engineering Honors Program requirements are met and discuss post-university opportunities. Build relationships with departments to provide students with creative solutions and unique opportunities available to them across the College and University. Assist students in achieving academic, personal, and professional success. (50%)
  • Undergraduate Peer Advisor Training / Project Coordination - Alongside the Program Manager, coordinate on training and oversee project assignments for the Undergraduate Peer Advisors. Work to track project completion and provide feedback to the Peer Advisors. Provide status updates to the professional staff. (25%)
  • Public Presentations – Speak about the Engineering Honors Program and course planning at specific events, such as Honors Workshops and our Honors Information Session (15%)
  • Additional projects related to advising as assigned and/or based on the interests of the program assistant. (10%)
Educational Value

The main skills gained will be in Academic Advising. Additionally, the program assistant will learn about program management, public speaking, leadership skills, and cross-departmental collaboration. This position is housed in Michigan Engineering, but does not require any STEM background (none of the staff in our office has an engineering degree!)
