Job description: The Global Scholars Program (GSP) is a living-learning community that prepares undergraduate students (sophomores and above) for culturally-responsive global leadership. Our approximately 120 members hold citizenships in dozens of countries and collectively speak over 30 languages, making our community one of the most globally diverse on campus. Approximately 80 Global Scholars live together in the same residence hall during their first year of GSP membership and complete a 2-semester course sequence on urgent global issues. Essentially, they are immersed in an ongoing intercultural academic and social experience. About 35 students are selected to return to GSP for a second or third year in one of our student staff or volunteer roles. These juniors and seniors coordinate various educational and community-building activities for the first-year Global Scholars (sophomores and above). Each leadership position offers a different pathway for students to continue developing their intercultural skills. GSP seeks a graduate student Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC) to work closely with the GSP associate director and another SEC to co-supervise GSP’s second and third-year student leaders (student staff and volunteers). The SECs’ primary responsibilities fall into the following two categories: 1) Assisting with Student Leadership and Community Engagement The selected SEC will be assigned to 2-3 groups of our student staff or volunteers to help train and co-supervise them in their roles. The SEC's assigned role groups will depend upon the SEC's background experiences and skills. These role groups include: 8 Dialogue Facilitators, who develop and facilitate cross-cultural dialogues for our first-year members. Topics include nationality, race, and ethnicity; gender and sexuality; immigration; community activism; and more. 20 Global Engagement Fellows, who continue their global social justice scholarship and intercultural relationship-building by taking a GSP class, attending five GSP community events per semester, and participating in the GSP student org (see below). Approximately 20-30 members of the volunteer Global Scholars Student Organization (GSSO). This voluntary student organization is governed by a student executive board and is open to all current GSP members. GSSO members organize social and educational activities, such as coordinating global holiday and tradition events, as well as hosting the annual GSP Culture Show (Fall semester) and GSP Spring Gala (Winter semester). GSSO also engages in community service rooted in GSP's mission and provides valuable student perspectives to guide the program forward.
SECs facilitate student leaders' weekly meetings, developing agendas that help students practice collaboration, purpose-driven event coordination, goal-setting, and self-reflection with culturally-diverse group members. SECs also conduct routine individual check-ins and follow-up with students as needed. SECs take a developmental and educational approach when students show signs of disengagement, difficulty meeting their goals, and/or group dynamics that potentially harm relationships. Finally, SECs serve as a central point person for student-organized events in order to support communication between leadership groups. 2) Administrative Support SECs help administer GSP services. They assist with creating and/or editing GSP's newsletters, social media, and blog site. SECs convey important messages to students via email, Google Chat, Google Calendar, and Campus; provide on-site support at community-wide GSP events and leadership retreats; and work closely with the GSP office manager to coordinate programming logistics such as catering, reserving rooms, ordering materials, etc. Other Projects Depending on the Selected Candidate’s Interests and Program Needs Student Engagement Coordinators assist with additional projects, such as coordinating GSP's annual Global Citizenship in Practice conference and leading workshops on topics of interest. Previous examples of workshop topics include incorporating GSP into cover letters, resumes, and interview responses and allyship to specific marginalized groups. While time constraints may not allow the SEC to participate in every aspect of the program that interests them, we would be happy to adapt the work plan to meet their needs, skills, and interests. This position is ideal for those who are interested in and/or have experience with: Living-learning programs Collaborations between academic and student affairs Cross-cultural learning, global engagement, and working with international students Pedagogies of social justice education and intergroup dialogue Multicultural programming Leadership development Supporting underrepresented students, including transfer and first-generation students
