 Expect Respect Program Assistant Job Description The Dean of Students office promotes student development and enhances the Michigan experience of undergraduate and graduate students through programs such as Expect Respect, services, partnerships/connections, and policy development that promote an inclusive campus climate and facilitate the successful navigation of campus life. Expect Respect is a values-driven messaging campaign developed through a collaborative partnership among students, faculty, and staff. The initiative fosters a shared sense of community and belonging, grounded in mutual respect and a commitment to creating a welcoming campus environment. Through educational efforts and outreach, Expect Respect promotes a campus culture where all individuals are treated with dignity, encouraged to show up authentically, and supported in contributing to a respectful and inclusive university experience. The program encourages open dialogue, compassionate engagement, and everyday actions that strengthen our community across differences. Basic Function and Responsibility: Expect Respect Program Assistants work to actively partner with Student Life units, the academic community, and student organizations to proactively foster a respectful and inclusive campus climate and promote social justice across campus. Characteristic Duties: Develop and facilitate proactive initiatives through partnerships established by the Dean of Students Office Lead and support efforts to augment messages of respect and inclusion throughout the University of Michigan community. Facilitate workshops and presentations with groups and other organizations. Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with campus partners and identity-based student organizations.
Engage the University of Michigan community around topics of respect Work with various groups and organizations for future projects and initiatives, including the Student Advisory Board for Campus Climate Support. Liaison with Student Life units, University departments, and student groups within the schools to promote positive messaging around an inclusive and respectful campus climate.
Utilize online resources and social media to enhance, augment, and promote Expect Respect as well as messages of inclusion and respect to the U-M community Stay abreast of campus climate issues. Aggregate content from various sources, including University departments and student organizations, to include on the Expect Respect website. Contribute written and visual material to social media sites, the Expect Respect website during high-risk time periods and/or events, and the Beyond the Diag Monthly Newsletter. Lead or contribute to the design and execution of promotional materials, including flyers, digital posts, and presentations that align with Expect Respect messaging and branding. Creative direction, visual storytelling, and consistency in tone and design are key to this work. Other duties as needed
Supervision Received: The Campus Climate Support/Expect Respect Program Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students supervise and evaluate program assistants. They are expected to hold regular office hours in the Dean of Students Office, work independently at times, and always exercise good judgment in setting priorities and applying University and department policies and procedures. Qualifications: Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful campus environment that values diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Experience and knowledge related to social justice, equity, and community engagement from a university-wide perspective are essential. Students should possess prior leadership experience, effective time management skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Strong verbal, written, and visual communication skills are necessary, including the ability to create digital content, presentations, and campaign materials for student-facing outreach.. A high attention to detail, a strong sense of accountability, and relevant coursework, such as Intergroup Relations training, are desirable. Expect Respect Program Assistants must be enrolled at U-M as full-time students. Additional highly desired qualifications: Experience with Canva, social media platforms (e.g., TikTok, Instagram), creative design work (graphics, PowerPoint presentations, etc.), Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet). Working Conditions and Hours: Program Assistants are expected to provide Expect Respect programmatic support through marketing and public relations efforts at student programs/events, including, but not limited to, hosting marketing tables, using social media, and making public and virtual presentations (e.g., Welcome to Michigan, Festifall, Musicfest, and Diag Days). Be available to coordinate, work, or manage early morning, afternoon, and evening indoor and outdoor locations. Be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. This position will start in late August 2025. Scheduling will be discussed as the term approaches and will accommodate student class schedules. Zoom Interviews will begin in June/July 2025.
Compensation: Compensation is based on qualifications and related experience, with a starting salary range of $16 - $18 per hour. The position works an average of 8-10 hours per week, with the potential for 15 hours per week at peak program times. This position is also open to work-study students. We seek to hire one Program Assistants (undergraduate and graduate students can apply) for the Fall/Winter terms. Spring and Summer employment may be available on a limited basis when funding is available. Remote Work Expectations:While this role is primarily in-person, limited remote work may be permitted on a case-by-case basis, especially if a student's scheduled hours align with the supervisor's remote work days. In these instances, remote work may be approved with the clear expectation that students remain engaged, responsive, and actively complete assigned tasks during their remote hours. That said, this position is highly collaborative, and in-person participation is essential to maintaining strong partnerships, facilitating programming, and engaging in team-based work. You may not complete all or the majority of your hours remotely. Program Assistants are expected to have consistent in-person availability to contribute meaningfully to shared responsibilities and planning efforts. Flexibility for remote work may be extended in cases of illness, family emergencies, or other temporary situations, but these arrangements must be discussed and approved in advance. Remote work is not guaranteed and is evaluated based on the needs of the program and team.
