U-M DPSS Overview

Strategic Communications is part of the university’s  Division of Public Safety and Security, which includes the U-M Police Department, Housing Security, and Michigan Medicine Security.  Our Strategic Communication team provides marketing and communications support for our departments in their efforts to engage with and educate the U-M community on various public safety topics. 

Job Description 

The DPSS Strategic Communications team seeks a web/UX intern who understands the power of visual communication and marketing. Strategic Communications is the source of public safety communications at the University of Michigan. 

 

Intern Responsibilities

We are looking for a talented, inventive student with a passion for web design to help us visually represent our division’s messages in a meaningful, impactful, and effective way. This intern will work directly with the Strategic Communications team to develop print and digital marketing materials to increase visibility and support our education initiatives. You will be allowed to create a range of assets that help us better reach our campus community. The scope of assignments will depend on the level of ability and experience.

Compensation

  • Graduate students will earn $18.00 per hour, and undergraduate students will earn $16.00 per hour

Duration of Internship

  • The summer semester and the following academic year.

  • On average, the intern will devote a minimum of 15 hours per week to this commitment; if you are taking classes, the weekly time commitment recommends not exceeding 29 hours, according to the University’s student employment policy.

The goal of the Graphic Design internship is for interns to gain experience through the learning outcomes listed below:

Job Requirements

Job Requirements 

  • Proficiency in Google Docs Suite 
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, or other common design applications
  • Experience working in content management systems
  • Previous experience in UX, web design, graphic design, professional, extracurricular, or academic

Desired Qualifications 

  • Major in UX design, web design, communications, or a similar field 
  • Experience in branding 
  • Interest in pursuing a professional design career 
  • Punctual and accurate communicator, responsive to email, phone calls, or other communications from manager 
  • Works with initiative and proactively looks for new opportunities

Ideal Candidates 

  • Understand the fundamentals of design, but strive to be inventive 
  • Stay up-to-date with design trends and have a personal interest in the industry as it relates to marketing and communication 
  • Quick learner, eager to grow, ask questions, and try new things
