Job Description

The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI) supports and celebrates the
unique experiences and backgrounds of students as well as their communities and
identities. We collaborate with campus and external partners on programs and
initiatives that help students develop the skills and perspectives necessary to succeed
in college and beyond while supporting U-M in its ongoing commitment to nurture an
intellectually and culturally diverse campus.

The Communications Assistant works closely with and reports to the Assistant Director
of Marketing and Communication to develop, craft, and publicize social and digital
content. The assistant will support OAMI programs and initiatives by working with staff
and students to promote events and highlight ongoing work within the office. They will
actively write and edit content for email, web, and social media. A key aspect of the
assistantship will involve overseeing a bi-weekly email newsletter for
SuccessConnects using Mailchimp.

The role will include such tasks as:

  • Attending OAMI events to create social posts, which will sometimes require evening and weekend assignments.
  • Creating content calendars for social media and website content
  • Pitching ideas and developing content for events and other newsworthy stories
  • Organizing digital assets to publish in posts and emails and on web pages
  • Reviewing performance and engagement metrics and providing reports and recommendations for improvement

 

Educational Value

The assistant will learn about digital marketing and communication strategies for supporting and promoting a mission-driven, diversity-focused organization. The assistant will get real-world experience developing digital content that will help inform and educate the university and broader community about OAMI’s work. The assistant will learn how to tailor content to specific audiences and hone their writing skills across several formats. They will have an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to handle multiple projects with varying levels of complexity to deliver based on event schedules and content calendars. Additionally, the assistant will be able to develop their communication and collaboration skills with students, faculty, and staff. 

Job Requirements

The assistant should possess strong writing and storytelling skills. They should be familiar with various social media channels and have an understanding of how to use them in a professional context. A link to an example of work that demonstrates such skills (either from a class or outside work) is preferred. There will be plenty of opportunities to build up skills, so an eagerness to learn and enthusiasm to try new things is always welcomed.

These attributes would also be highly desirable:

  • Experience with Mailchimp
  • Working knowledge of WordPress website authoring
  • Journalism and/or communication experience
