Job Description

Are you a strong writer with a passion for the arts? The U-M Arts Initiative is hiring one student Arts Journalist to cover events, interview artist residents, and explore the vibrant creative culture on and around campus.

About the Role
As an Arts Journalist, you’ll attend and review live performances, exhibitions, installations, and other campus arts events. You’ll also contribute interviews, features, and opinion pieces that highlight the stories and ideas shaping U-M’s creative community. This is a unique opportunity to build your portfolio, meet artists and arts leaders, and amplify the campus arts scene.

  • Paid position ($18/hr)
     

  • Flexible hours; remote and in-person work
     

  • Ideal for students pursuing journalism, English, art & design, communications, or other related fields

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Attend and write timely reviews of arts events on campus and in the Ann Arbor area
     

  • Conduct interviews with visiting artists, faculty, students, and other creative voices
     

  • Pitch and write feature stories, artist profiles, and arts commentary
     

  • Collaborate with the Arts Initiative’s communications team and staff on editorial planning
     

  • Publish 1–2 articles per month (flexible based on your schedule and academic calendar)

  • Prior experience with journalism, blogging, or creative writing preferred

  • Comfortable working independently and meeting deadlines
     

  • U-M undergraduate or graduate students preferred

Hourly Rate $18.00/hour
Hours 10.0 hours per week
