2025 Digital Preservation Lab Internship

The University of Michigan Library’s Digital Preservation Unit supports preservation and access to the library’s digital collections through consultation, research, policy development, and managing the library's Digital Preservation Lab. This internship is focused on work to further the preservation of the library’s born-digital and digitized collections with a focus on access and sustainability, and will include material from the Special Collections Library and other areas. The intern will be embedded in the work of the Digital Preservation Lab, which will include a focus on:

  • Developing and executing a plan to migrate legacy file formats.

  • Adapting and sharing existing workflow documentation. 

  • Assisting in the Library’s web archiving program.

Educational Value

The student will gain experience in implementing a digital preservation project, receive hands-on experience working in the library’s Digital Preservation Laboratory, and will work closely with staff from the Digital Preservation Unit and other stakeholders across the library. 
Job Requirements

The only requirement to apply is active enrollment in the UMSI graduate program and a demonstrated interest in digital preservation and library/archives practices.
Hourly Rate $18.00/hour
Hours 12.0 to 15.0 hours per week
Time Frame Fall/Winter
Start Date Start date will be determined after a student is selected.
End Date The internship will run through the fall of 2025 with possible extension through winter 2026
