Job Description

STUDENT DRIVER for the BENTLEY HISTORICAL LIBRARY

We are looking for a reliable student who will safely drive a small cargo van, mainly between the North Campus Research Center (NCRC) and the 1150 Beal Avenue locations, to pick up and drop off Bentley Historical Library collections needed for reference and digitization use.

Their primary responsibility will be to safely transport the collections in the van, safely transport materials from the van to buildings, and track each item's location using workflow management software (Aeon).

Other duties as needed:

  • Reshelving and re-boxing collections
  • Barcoding and labeling collections
  • Surveying shelves for needed repairs to the collection housing
  • Other organizational duties centered around collections use and care

The student will work between the hours of 9 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday. The ideal candidate will be available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for regularly-scheduled van deliveries.

Pay: Undergraduate Students $15/hour and Graduate Students $17/hour

Educational Value

This position provides an opportunity to learn about the Michigan historical collections and the University of Michigan archives. The student employee will learn proper care and handling of historical archival materials and will learn to use library- and archives-specific tools such as Aeon.

Job Requirements

This position requires:

  • Strength to safely lift and carry 30-40-pound boxes. This includes using proper lifting techniques to load transit boxes and push carts with boxes weighing more than 100 pounds, and to load and unload boxes from a van at a loading dock. Lifting will also be done to reshelve and take items off the shelves safely and properly to avoid injury.
  • Must be able to provide a valid driver's license and be willing and able to drive a University of Michigan van.
  • Must be willing and able to cooperate and communicate with other team members effectively.
  • Must understand, appreciate, and carefully handle the historical value of archives and historical materials.
Hourly Rate $15.00/hour to $17.00/hour
