Job Description

Multicultural Lounge Community Coordinator

Job Description Academic Year 2025-2026

 

Introduction

As an expression of Michigan Housing’s commitment to creating inclusive communities, the multicultural lounges on campus provide a space where community members can engage with diverse ideas, perspectives, and stories of individuals and communities. All residents are welcome to use the multicultural lounges for studying, collaborating with peers, learning and educating, reflecting, and hosting inclusive planned events for residential communities.

 

The Multicultural Lounge Community Coordinator (MLCC) serves as a leader for the Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant (MLCA) staff. In addition to the duties of the MLCA position, the MLCC works closely with the Program Manager to support the programming and administrative processes, while acting as a peer mentor among MLCA staff. Another primary responsibility of the MLCC is to conduct research related to the multicultural lounges and support components of the weekly MLCA meeting in coordination with the Program Manager. This is an in-person position.

 

Position Description:

 

Community Building Responsibilities 50%

The Multicultural Lounge Community Coordinator will be responsible for creating a positive and welcoming space for individuals entering the Multicultural Lounge and among the Multicultural Lounge Community Assistants. Community building responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Publicly represent M Housing and answer questions about the multicultural lounge.

  • Engage and interact with residents in the multicultural lounge during each shift.

  • Assist with various M Housing programs, projects, and events in the spaces.

  • Model personal behavior that is consistent with the M Housing mission, Community Living at Michigan Standards, Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and public health guidelines.

  • Assist in implementing You Belong Here Programming as needed.

  • Assist the Program Manager with oversight of the multicultural lounges and support for the Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant staff.

  • Collaborate with campus partner events in the space including but not limited to MESA, Spectrum Center, Academic Units, Heritage Month Events, and others.

  • Meet weekly with a cohort of 3-4 MLCAs to discuss strategies for engaging with community members and programs.

 

Administrative Tasks 50%

The Multicultural Lounge Community Coordinator will assist with the daily operations of the multicultural lounge program, including, but not limited to:

  • Ensure proper use of the multicultural lounge when groups or individuals are using the space.

  • Attend and support weekly meetings with the MLCA team in collaboration with the other MLCCs and the Program Manager.

  • Attend weekly one-on-one check-ins with the Program Manager to discuss MLCA trends related to skill building needs, program evaluations, and the multicultural lounge program.

  • Tracking multicultural lounge coverage, MLCA hours, programs, program evaluations, and attendance for End of Year reporting.

  • Complete a shift checklist during each shift in a multicultural lounge to report on any problems, damage or thefts to equipment or furniture within the multicultural lounge.

  • Prepare report summaries to share with the Program Manager noting any problems, damage or thefts to equipment and furniture within the lounge.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems with systems, employees, and guests of the multicultural lounge.

  • Assist with projects related to the multicultural lounges.

  • Conduct research and routine audits of the multicultural lounge spaces.

  • Assist with management of the multicultural lounges, including compliance with public health guidelines, and sharing needs of the space with full time staff. 

  • Respond promptly to email communications from the Program Manager and other student or professional staff.

  • Check the function of technology in the multicultural lounges, particularly before meetings and events highlighted by M Housing full time staff.

 

Perform other duties related to the operation of the Multicultural Lounge as assigned by M Housing’s full time staff.

 
Educational Value

Students will develop skills in peer mentoring, leadership, facilitation, administrative support, problem solving, research, program planning, community building, and time management.

Job Requirements

Position Requirements

  • Enrolled as a student for the 2025-2026 academic year.

  • Available for weekly staff meetings on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

  • Must be in good academic standing

  • Experience in a customer service setting.

  • Must have a flexible work schedule and be available to work half of their hours during the business day (M-F, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) to overlap with full-time staff and the other half of hours during the evenings or on weekends to work in the multicultural lounges with MLCAs.

  • Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws.

  • Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the M Housing Community Living at Michigan Standards, and any other applicable University policies and procedures.

 

  • May not simultaneously hold another student staff position in M Housing. 

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with M Housing and the multicultural lounges.

  • Strong consideration will be given to students living on-campus during the 2025-2026 academic year.
