Job Description

The LSA Transfer Student Center is seeking LSA transfer students to work as Transfer Student Ambassadors as part of the team helping prospective transfer students and as staff in the Transfer Student Center. 

 

To be eligible for this position you must have transferred from one of the following community colleges: Grand Rapids Community College, Henry Ford College, or Schoolcraft College.  Additionally, you must be a student who transferred into LSA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Required 

  • Provide mentorship to prospective transfer students currently attending the community college from which you transferred, maintaining a caseload of at least 10 mentees

    • Mentor students by conducting regular check-ins focusing on the transfer process and opportunities through TB2H

    • Assist mentees in navigating the application process

    • Provide guidance and advice on the transfer student experience and opportunities students can participate in before transferring

    • Guide admitted students to help them successfully transition to their first semester

  • Staff the Transfer Student Center 

    • Answer questions and direct current students to campus resources

    • Answer questions from prospective students in person or by phone

    • Staff events in the TSC

    • Complete clerical tasks as assigned

  • Participate in recruitment events

    • Provide tours of Central Campus to prospective transfer students, community college groups, and admitted transfer students.

    • Participate in online student recruitment events such as student panels and drop-in info sessions.

    • Staff Transfer Student Days for admitted transfer students.  The bulk of these hours will be in staffing the 5-6 days held in the winter semester.

  • Engage in professional development and participate in team meetings and trainings 

    • Attend weekly meetings on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 PM with the LSA transfer recruitment team and other Transfer Student Ambassadors

    • Meet regularly with with the Recruiting Coordinator assigned to work with students from your community college

    • Complete Ambassador training, including certification for campus tours, panel training, Transfer Student Center training, and mentorship training. 

    • Other tasks as assigned
       

Additional Optional Opportunities

  • Event Planning

    • As part of a team, develop and host events for transfer students in the Transfer Student Center and in outside venues.

  • Administrative Tasks Group

    • As part of this group, support the efforts of the Transfer Student Center and Transfer Team by completing administrative tasks. 

  • Coordinator Positions

    • After the first semester, you will be eligible to apply for leadership positions within the Transfer Student Ambassadors for the next academic year. 

  • Recruitment Events @ Community Colleges

    • Attend recruitment events at your community college along with LSA Student Recruitment staff. 

Educational Value

This position will provide valuable training and experience working in a team-oriented office environment. Students will gain significant experience in public speaking, guest service, interacting with different groups of people, and program planning.

 
Job Requirements
  • Must be a current LSA undergraduate transfer student in good academic standing who transferred from Grand Rapids Community College, Henry Ford College, or Schoolcraft College. We encourage students just starting in LSA this fall to apply!

  • Willingness to develop strong guest service skills.

  • All the things transfer students possess: Strong organization, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills - and grit and determination.

  • Willingness to learn and articulate the value of a liberal arts education in LSA. 

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
