Job Description

Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum is looking to hire Horticulture Assistants to work with our Horticulture Team in our conservatory and greenhouses on the care of our plant collections; in the display gardens, in support of teaching, research, public outreach, and conservation goals. Job duties may include: watering, plant propagation and cleaning in our conservatory, greenhouses and work areas, and weeding, removing invasive species, and planting, pruning, mulching and other tasks in outdoor collections and display gardens. Work is performed inside and outside during a wide range of weather and environmental conditions. We are looking for students who can work Fall and Winter terms for at least 4 hours per week.

 
Educational Value

Students will gain an understanding of conservatory and greenhouse operations and  landscape maintenance in the care of various living plant collections, display gardens including the Peony Garden and trails. Students will learn plant identification skills and proper horticultural practices and be trained to safely use hand and power tools, tractors and utility vehicles.

Job Requirements

University of Michigan student with a good work ethic, enthusiasm for teamwork and a willingness to learn.  Requires the ability to transport up to 40 pounds, work independently and a willingness to work in varied environments.  Experience in greenhouse operation, landscaping or gardening is desired. Transportation assistance may be available. Students must be eligible for federal work study.

Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
