Job Description

Provides general clerical support in a patient care environment. Arranges and coordinates support and ancillary services for patient care. Provides customer service to patients by facilitating business processes including appointment scheduling, check-in and check-out, pre-arrival and telephone triage. Makes arrangements for admissions, transfers and processing of patient discharges. Provides administrative support for clients based programs. Responds to inquiries concerning department programs, services and activities.

This work-study position offers a unique opportunity for students to gain firsthand exposure to the field of genetic counseling, providing valuable insight into the intersection of genetics, medicine, and patient care. Students will develop a deeper understanding of genetic conditions, inheritance patterns, risk assessment, and the psychosocial impact of genetic information on individuals and families.

Job Requirements
  • Enrollment

    • Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student in a related field (e.g., biology, genetics, psychology, public health, pre-med, or a health science major).

    • Eligible for Federal or Institutional Work-Study Program.

  • Academic Background

    • Coursework in biology, genetics, psychology, or related disciplines is strongly preferred.

    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher (may vary by institution).

  • Skills & Competencies

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.

    • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic data entry.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Interpersonal Qualities

    • Interest in patient care, counseling, and/or genetics.

    • Compassionate, empathetic, and respectful of diverse populations.

    • Willingness to learn and ask questions.

  • Availability

    • Must be able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule during the academic term.

    • Availability for 10–20 hours per week, depending on the position and student schedule.

  • Additional Preferences (optional)

    • Prior experience in a healthcare, research, or counseling setting is a plus.

    • Familiarity with medical terminology or electronic health records (EHR) is helpful but not required.
