Job Description

The Fellows working on this project will create an exhibit that will highlight the Sam Karres Archive 1955-2012 (consisting primarily of sketches and watercolors) and contextualize the importance of his work depicting ordinary life in Detroit, particularly Greektown. The Fellows will gain an understanding of Detroit and Greektown, learn how to search for library resources and archives, contextualize historical material, learn how to write for exhibits, develop project management skills, integrate best accessibility practices, and work in a small team. The culmination of these activities and acquired skills will be an exhibit that will help the U-M community and others easily understand the importance of Sam Karres and the value of library archives and resources.

 

Students are also required to do this library specific applcation.

 
Educational Value

Students will learn project management, exhibit development, how to conduct academic research, in particular, special archives research, and accessibility practices.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

U-M undergraduate or graduate student in good standing.

 

Position-Specific Desired Qualifications: 

  • Interest in developing and implementing art exhibits

  • Interest in libraries and archives, especially from a Humanities perspective

  • Interest in learning more about Greektown and Detroit 

  • Interest in collaborative work

  • Interest in accessibility practices

  • Effective verbal, written and presentation communication skills

  • No Modern Greek skills required

 

Expectations:

  • Communicate directly, effectively, and regularly

  • Adhere to agreed-upon schedule and project deadlines, communicating any challenges or barriers to the mentor.

  • Periodically attend Engagement Fellow training sessions and cohort meetings. 

  • Publically share the project process and results with the library community near the end of the academic year.
