Job Description |
The University of Michigan Library's Shapiro Design Lab (SDL) is seeking students to join our media support team. In this ever-evolving experimental space founded on peer learning, engaged learning, and multimodality, interns will support the Media Production Rooms, assist with workshops, provide consultations, and participate in growing the Design Lab with their own ideas and passions.
The Media Production Rooms (MPRs) are located on the first floor of the Shapiro Library and the work in these rooms is guided by our principles and encompasses a variety of learning opportunities and projects. The three rooms offer a variety of tools and software that can be used for audio production, motion graphics, video production, and graphic design. We work a great deal with audio and video storytelling and podcasting. Projects have included making, editing, and distributing long-form stories or an ongoing, multi-episode podcast, working with community partners on local audio recovery projects, and multimodal course work. |

Educational Value |
This position will give students the opportunity to gain skills which are transferable into multiple areas of their current and post U-M life. Skills like audio editing, video editing, telling stories through the medium of podcasting, and the ability to organize and lead workshops. |

Job Requirements |
ResponsibilitiesWork a 6-10 hours per week at $16-18/hour (depending on experience) Daily maintenance and operations of Media Production Room equipment (cleaning, organizing, basic equipment maintenance, and documentation) Provide peer consultation and instruction to Media Production Room users and community members Technical support for audio/video production software and hardware Updating MPR documentation and systems including research and development of physical and software tools, training resources, and job aids Assist with MPR projects with campus and outside partners Regularly engage with Lab colleagues via monthly Community Nights Write an end of year summary about your experience working in the Design Lab for our blog, Lab Notes Explore and develop your own interests and talents as part of the learning community
QualificationsExperience with audio, visual, and recording technologies Detail oriented, dependable and timely when communicating across multiple media (e.g. email, chat, etc.) Ability to be self-motivated and work independently Desire to work both collaboratively and cooperatively in the service of building a learning community in the Shapiro Design Lab Interest in collaborating with individuals from a diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and viewpoints Passion for and alignment with the Design Lab’s principles Given the Design Lab’s exploratory and experimental character, possessing the ability to respond to changing needs within a project and with
Desired QualificationsExperience with any or all of the following: Audio and music production software and hardware (e.g. Audition, Ableton, Logic) Video Production hardware and software (e.g. Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro) Graphic Design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud)
