Job Description |
Job Summary/Responsibilities: Assist with the coordination of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AA&PI HM), a campus-wide month of programming celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander histories, stories, cultures, and more Recruit students, staff, faculty, and community members to serve on planning committee Schedule meeting times and reserve space for planning committee meetings (beginning late-November and ending in April) Lead planning committee meetings by preparing agendas, facilitating meetings, and sending out meeting minutes Assist with setup, implementation, and cleanup of AA&PI HM programs and events Assist in outreach and marketing efforts including but not limited to: attending student organization meetings, contacting local community organizations, creating and disseminating promotional materials In coordination with MESA Program Manager and Office Manager, manage purchases and reimbursements to stay within program and event budgets Able to oversee and track all budgeting and expenses that are purchased throughout the heritage month Recruit and collaborate with other community stakeholders such as campus partners and student orgs Oversee updating MESA & U-M websites, and social media platforms Support and advise the organization, planning, and recruiting participants for all AA&PI HM events throughout the semester Assist in selection and management of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month committee with Program Manager Promote and advertise Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month opportunities and collaborate on AA&PI HM efforts through the MESA website and calendar. Maintain positive community relationships with all parties involved with heritage month special events Attend one hour one-on-one weekly staff meetings, included in weekly scheduled hours. Attend required MESA events Update legacy notes for continued program development
This role requires a self-directed, detail-oriented individual with outstanding organizational skills and a commitment to promoting a collaborative and vibrant community centering on AA&PI history, culture, and heritage. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys planning events, leading meetings, and working independently and on a team. This position requires availability during the evenings with occasional weekend hours, as well as attending weekly planning committee meetings. Interested students should be able to commit 6 months and with at least one year until expected graduation. The student coordinator in this role will need to be able to balance multiple projects while overseeing the creation of various elements for Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This position will work closely with a staff member in the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA). MESA is a unit within Student Life at the University of Michigan. |

Position Requirements Assist in the training and development of AA&PI HM planning committee Maintain and build positive community relationships with all parties involved with Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Continue program development and prospective collaborations and partnerships Enrolled as a student for fall 2025/winter 2026 semester Ideally available to start in Mid-October Work a minimum of 5-15 hours/week (min and max) Demonstrated commitment and understanding of the Asian American and/or Pacific Islander student experiences An interest in and/or increasing familiarity with social identities, transformative learning, and U-M campus climate Highly organized, self-motivated, responsible, and able to take direction and work independently Possess the ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities to others Great verbal and written communication skills Excellent time management skills – the ability to manage one’s schedule with school work, this position, and other obligations Must be attentive to detail, reliable, and able to meet deadlines Familiarity with social media (Instagram) Availability to attend heritage month programs and events (evening and weekend hours during the months of March and April) Be team-oriented and comfortable delivering presentations/workshops and speaking in public Demonstrated experience in drafting formal reports and presentations Exercise strong interpersonal skills – the ability to represent the office in contacts and communications with stakeholders and to communicate effectively with MESA staff and other constituents Excited to work with MESA Have fun!
