Job Description

Located at the KMS Building (3621 S. State Street, Door 710; Ann Arbor MI 48108)- Parking free. Housing Bureau for Seniors (HBS) is a non profit organization through University of Michigan Health. This organization provides housing resources for Seniors aged 55 and up through many different programs including Foreclosure Prevention, Eviction Prevention and Housing Counseling. Annually, HBS provides a free tax preparation program in partnership with the AARP Foundation for the community.

The purpose of the Work Study position is to support the Free Tax Preparation Program through its season which runs from late December until Mid-April. This program offers a way to connect with community members of varying ages and socioeconomic statuses to help complete their income taxes for free. This program has been a part of the community for many years. Tax returns are an important component of the Foreclosure Prevention Program as these returns assist with paying housing costs and can help with other programs that can reduce property taxes throughout the county. Please note this position does not require you to complete tax returns but facilitate the program for tax preparers to meet with clients in the community.

 

Duties would include:

1) Managing phone calls and scheduling appointments

2) Assisting with mailing necessary documents to help clients prepare for their appointments

3) Acting as a liaison between the community and the certified tax preparers from AARP Tax Aide.

4) Utilizing google drive and outlook calendar for scheduling

5) Facilitating day of tax clinics- set up and take down of equipment assisting clients with getting to their appointment etc.

Educational Value

Students will receive communication and customer service skill practice, community engagement with adults (mostly older) and the tax preparers. Will also receive practice in data entry and organizational skills. Students will also learn a lot about income tax preparation and its benefits and tax rules and regulations.

Job Requirements

Must have experience with Google Drive and Outlook calendar as well as comfort with using the phone and engaging with older adults and volunteers. Must have good organizational and time management skills.

Must be available Wednesdays.
