Job Description

The student will assist with target fabrication in the Michigan Target Fabrication and Research (MiTRF) lab. We fabricate targets and experimental components for use in high-energy-density and plasma physics experiments.

Duties may include:

  • Operate a laser-cutter to cut metals and plastics
  • Assemble millimeter and sub-millimeter components under a microscope
  • Measure and characterize components and targets with a digital microscope
  • Design jigs and fixtures and use an SLA 3D printer to print prototypes
  • Fabrication in Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (coatings, etching, lithography)

Educational Value

Students gain hands-on engineering experience, problem solving skills, and laboratory experience in this role. Students will learn/practice computer aided design (CAD). There are also opportunities to network with graduate students and scientists in our research group to learn about the experiments we support. Components produced by the students are used in real physics experiments and contribute to research in topics such as laboratory astrophysics, inertial confinement fusion, and more.
