Job Description

Remote Student Assistant for GSI & IA Teaching Orientations needed to fill one position at U-M Center for Research on Learning and Teaching in Engineering (CRLT-Engin).

 

Primary responsibilities include supporting each semester’s College of Engineering GSI & IA Teaching Orientation by doing such tasks as:

  • Creating & Editing Canvas Course Content:

    • proofreading and making updates to the Canvas course;

    • updating documents in Google Drive;

    • ensuring that documents are digitally accessible;

    • editing videos, captions, and transcripts;

  • Tracking Course Completion:

    • monitoring completion of Canvas course and marking submissions as complete;

    • using spreadsheets to track GSIs'/IAs' Canvas training completion;

    • tracking GSIs’/IAs’ registration and participation in events & CRLT-Engin services with a spreadsheet;

  • Communicating With Participants & Stakeholders:

    • communicating course expectations and instructions via email to participants, facilitators, departments, and CRLT-Engin team members;

    • answering questions from stakeholders via email;

  • Data Analysis & Presentation:

    • organizing evaluation responses and identifying common themes;

    • presenting evaluation data findings to CRLT-Engin team members;

  • CRLT-Engin Community Expectations:

    • receiving assignments and marking them complete via Asana;

    • attending meetings with team members and other CRLT-Engin staff as assigned;

    • answering emails from team members promptly;

  • …and other tasks as assigned.

 

This position is remote, and hours are flexible. Starting pay rate is $17.00/hour. The closing date for this posting is 11/2/2025. Educational Value

Student assistants at CRLT-Engin develop their office and people skills within a cohesive team that works with faculty, graduate student instructors, and instructional aides to promote excellence and innovation in engineering education. They receive training on digital accessibility, including the creation of transcripts, and learn how to use Canvas from an instructor's perspective.

Job Requirements

The Remote Student Assistant for GSI & IA Teaching Orientations must have keen attention to detail, the ability to multitask well, and proficiency with Google Suite and Excel. We also require someone who is responsible and dependable, and who takes initiative to help us improve our services. Due to the remote nature of the position, the Remote Student Assistant must be able to monitor and respond to email correspondence within 24 hours and able to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision. No previous experience with digital accessibility or transcript creation is required, as training will be provided. Engineering knowledge is not required, and students from any department may apply. Applicants with relevant experience will be considered first. A few weeks may require greater than 10.0 hours per week (up to 20.0 hours).
