Job Description

Remote Student Assistant for  External Communications & Technology Support needed to fill one position at the U-M Center for Research on Learning and Teaching in Engineering (CRLT-Engin). CRLT-Engin seeks a detail-oriented and tech-savvy student assistant to support our external communication and digital presence. In this remote role, you'll support the management of online content, create digitally accessible materials, design graphics, and ensure high-quality communication for projects that reach faculty, staff, students, and campus partners across Michigan Engineering and beyond.

 

Primary responsibilities will include the following:

 

Digital Content Management (45%)

- Ensure digital accessibility through alt text creation and content remediation, e.g., adding heading structure to Google Docs and slides, and remediating PDFs through alt text addition, structural tagging, and reading order correction.

- Update templates for presentations and workshop handouts

- Edit images, videos, captions, and transcripts as needed

 

Communication & Design (30%)

- Create graphics and marketing materials using Canva and Adobe InDesign

- Draft social media content based on team-provided information

- Write and edit professional bios, announcements, and promotional content

- Proofread emails, documents, and web pages for clarity, accessibility, and accuracy

 

Administrative & Project Support (25%)

- Maintain email distribution lists in MailChimp and MCommunity

- Support special projects and initiatives as needed

 

 Core Skills We're Looking For:

Technical Proficiency:

- WordPress and Canvas (or similar CMS/LMS platforms)

- Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms)

- Graphic design tools (Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite)

- Basic photo/video editing capabilities

 

Communication Excellence:

- Outstanding written communication and editing skills

- Ability to craft clear, engaging content for diverse audiences

- Social media content creation experience

 

Working Style:

- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy

- Strong time management abilities

- Self-directed and reliable in a remote work environment

- Proactive problem-solver who takes initiative

 

Commitment to Accessibility:

- Understanding of digital accessibility principles (or eagerness to learn)

- Dedication to creating inclusive, accessible content for all users

 

This position is remote, and hours are flexible. Starting pay rate is $17.00/hour. The closing date for this posting is December 1, 2025. Job Requirements

Required:

- Current U-M student (undergraduate or graduate)

- Proficiency with Google Suite and excellent written communication skills

- Experience with at least one graphic design tool (Canva, Adobe InDesign, or similar)

- Strong organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects

- Reliable internet connection and workspace for remote work

- Friendly, responsible, and dependable approach to work  

- Responsiveness via email and the ability to work independently in a remote environment

 

Preferred:

- Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student

- Previous experience in communications, marketing, or digital content creation

- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Canvas, WordPress, and MailChimp

- Background in project management or coordination or the desire to learn

- Experience with digital accessibility remediation or the desire to learn

- Knowledge of or interest in engineering education

- Initiative to propose and implement service improvements
