Job Description

As a part of Michigan Medicine Health Advancement’s comprehensive mission, we are committed to building the next generation of nurses, health professionals and scientists. Our Middle School Math & Health Sciences Program partners with Ypsilanti Community Middle School to support sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who are underachieving in mathematics. Coaches will be champions for middle school students’ academic and college readiness. They will provide mathematics coaching and serve as mentors. Student Success Coaches will engage in group discussions and learn about culturally relevant pedagogy. Overall, this program requires a commitment of approximately 6 hours per week, including unpaid travel time.

Qualifications 

  • Passion for supporting middle school students’ success in math
  • Experience mentoring and/or providing academic coaching for students ages 11-14
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Current UM undergraduate, graduate, or medical student 
  • Good academic standing
  • Possess an interest in pre-health or health care fields and/or interest in math education
  • Availability to facilitate coaching 2-3 times per week during the designated times below
  • Personal transportation to Ypsilanti Community Middle School
Educational Value

Responsibilities

  • Attend an initial five-hour paid training in January 2026
  • Orientation training will be either January 10th or 11th 2026. Please hold both days. We will update you as soon as we have a finalized date.
  • 2 or 3 days per week, provide approximately 50-90 minutes total of mathematics coaching to 2-3 sixth-, seventh-, eighth-grade students from January 2026-April 2026.
  • Participate in one-hour professional development sessions twice per month.
  • Spend approximately one hour per week planning coaching sessions, focusing on any of the following areas: multiplication, division, factoring, order of operations, etc. Students will need support developing math comprehension.
  • Serve as a mentor and an academic and social role model.

Collaborate and check-in with teachers, utilizing student progress to develop coaching plans.

Job Requirements

Requirements: Applicants will engage in coaching at Ypsilanti Community Middle School on 2-3 days at a consistent time each day.

Must be available for at least two of the time periods (Monday through Friday) listed below. In your application, please include all of your possible available coaching times.

Examples:

I am available 7:42-9:14 (plus travel time) on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

I am available 9:16-11:35 Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 12:11-2:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Application Requirements: Submit a 1-2 page cover letter, resume, and an unofficial transcript to demonstrate you are in good academic standing. In your cover letter, tell us about your availability and your interests in math, health sciences and/or K-12 education. In addition, please share your relevant experience teaching and/or working with K-12 students and students from different backgrounds.
