Job Description

Position Summary:

Join the Sociology department’s effort to improve digital accessibility! We are seeking motivated undergraduate students to serve as Digital Accessibility Assistants, supporting faculty in updating Canvas course sites and digital materials to work towards University accessibility requirements by April 2026. Training will be provided. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty during scheduled working sessions to update syllabi, slides, PDFs, forms, and other course materials for accessibility.

  • Offer one-on-one assistance to faculty for both on-site and virtual assistance.

  • Review and revise digital content on Canvas to meet accessibility standards using tools such as Grackle and Panorama.

  • Provide guidance to faculty on using accessibility features within the Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides).

  • Use campus resources, including U-M Digital Accessibility website, attend training sessions, and consolidate training resources for departmental use. 

  • Document and track accessibility improvements.

Time Commitment:

8-10 hours per week beginning January 2026; additional hours may be available over Spring/Summer for continued employment. Regular working sessions will be scheduled on select Fridays throughout the Winter semester, but work scheduling will be coordinated based on availability. 

 
Educational Value

Students will gain professional experience utilizing technology to support our faculty and department. Communication skills and experience with technological accessibility tools will be gained.

  • Interest in digital accessibility, inclusive education, and supporting faculty.

  • Previous experience with Canvas and accessibility tools (Grackle, Panorama) preferred.

  • Proficient in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive).

  • Experience with PDF editing tools (Adobe Acrobat), document formatting, or basic HTML/CSS a plus

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn new software.

  • Preference may be given to undergraduate students with work study awards.

Hourly Rate $16.00/hour to $18.00/hour
