Job Description

Position Summary:

Support our Sociology faculty’s transition to accessible digital teaching by serving as a Graduate Digital Accessibility Specialist. In this role, you’ll leverage your advanced skills to update Canvas sites, enhance digital course materials, and provide individualized consultations for faculty preparing for the ADA Title II compliance target (April 2026). Training will be provided. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead working sessions with faculty for hands-on digital content accessibility updates (syllabi, PDFs, slides, forms, etc).

  • Use campus resources, including U-M Digital Accessibility website, attend training sessions, and consolidate training resources for departmental use. 

  • Host office hours and offer one-on-one in-person and/or virtual assistance for faculty consultation and coaching.

  • Audit and remediate Canvas course sites using Grackle, Panorama, and other accessibility tools.

  • Advise faculty on best practices for accessible course design and digital document creation (Google Suite, PDF editing, document structure).

  • Conduct training or workshops in coordination with the Digital Accessibility Program Office, LSA Tech Services, and/or ITS as needed to increase faculty awareness and skill in digital accessibility.

  • Keep accurate records of support provided and progress made toward accessibility compliance.

  • Potential for supervision of Undergraduate Digital Accessibility Assistants. 

Educational Value
Students will gain professional experience utilizing technology to support our faculty and department. Communication skills and experience with technological accessibility tools will be gained.
 
Job Requirements

Qualifications:

 

  • Graduate student status in good standing. 

  • Previous experience working with Canvas, digital accessibility tools (Grackle, Panorama), and Google Suite.

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with document remediation (e.g., accessible PDF creation, heading structures, alt text) highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with ADA/Section 508, U-M digital accessibility standards, or WCAG guidelines a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills, initiative, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
