Job Description

The Role of the Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS)

  • Collaborate with academic and research units, auxiliary units, and student groups to pursue U-M’s Sustainability Goals

  • Track and report the progress toward these goals

  • Communicate with the campus and the local community to engage staff, students, and faculty

  • OCS is part of Planet Blue Campus, a university-wide initiative to promote sustainable operations and engagement

Job Description

  • Primarily focused on project support for the Energy Management Team

  • Assist OCS with developing project work to decarbonize U-M’s three campuses

  • Developing energy project proposals across campus buildings

  • Gather field data within buildings

  • Assist engineers in preparing project proposals

  • Locate, print, and review applicable drawings and other data in preparation for developing project proposals, studies, and reports

  • Generate calculations and drawings to support proposals, review past projects, and complete other assignments designed to develop professional experience

  • Learn and apply standard engineering practices and techniques in specific situations

  • Assist Energy Management staff in building re-commissioning efforts, including building tune-ups

  • Prioritize between multiple project assignments

  • Participate in community engagement activities as needed

  • Experience working with the following computer platforms is required: MS Excel, Google Suite

  • Experience working with the following computer platforms is desired: AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Energy Star Portfolio Manager, SkySpark, Python

Job Requirements

Job Requirements

  • Sophomore standing (minimum) in engineering, architecture, or sustainability degree program at an accredited school

  • Knowledge of or interest in building heating/cooling/electrical systems, construction, and related trades is desired

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Attention to detail and recording observations

  • Ability to travel around campus to visit multiple locations and move through buildings with ease, including areas with limited access

  • Schedule

    • A flexible schedule will be offered during the academic year

    • Some weekend and evening work may be required depending on building availability

 

Rate and Hours 

  • Freshman: $17/hour

  • Sophomore: $17/hour

  • Junior: $18/hour

  • Senior: $18/hour

  • Graduate Student: $19/hour

  • 5-15 hours per week during the academic year

  • 40 hours per week in the summer (May - August)
