Job Description
The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI) supports and celebrates the unique experiences and backgrounds of students as well as their communities and identities. We collaborate with campus and external partners on programs and initiatives that help students develop the skills and perspectives necessary to succeed in college and beyond, while supporting the University of Michigan (UM) in its ongoing commitment to nurture an intellectually and culturally diverse campus.

The Graduate Program Assistant works closely with and reports to the MSTEP Program Director. This position will lead and support evaluation projects, such as the King, Chavez, Parks (KCP) Beginning of the Year Pre-Surveys, based on their goals, objectives, and activities; Mid-semester Surveys; 1st Year Decision-making Survey, Pre/Post Surveys for events (i.e., social and academic), and End-of-the-Year evaluations. These surveys and results will be stored in the OAMI database.  Rigorous statistical methods will be used to inform future surveys, goals, objectives, and activities.

The role will include such tasks as:
  • Design and implement evaluation projects, including analysis and reporting.
  • Manage and integrate small to medium-scale educational datasets (state, regional, and local surveys).
  • Apply advanced statistical methods (e.g., regression discontinuity, difference-in-differences, longitudinal analysis).
  • Develop automated reports and dashboards (R, Python, Stata, SQL, Tableau, Power BI).
  • Communicate findings in accessible formats for OAMI leadership, KCP leadership, clients, and policymakers as needed.
  • Support Program Director in designing elements of the MSTEP activities/workshops as needed.
Educational Value

The graduate assistant will have the opportunity to utilize advanced methodologies, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R), which enables evaluators to rigorously design and conduct evaluation studies.

Assessment Design: The graduate assistant will gain expertise in designing and evaluating various assessments and instruments, ensuring the reliability and validity of the data and the inferences drawn from it. Real-world Application and Impact: The graduate assistant will be positioned to provide crucial, evidence-based recommendations that shape educational policies, goals, development, and instructional strategies. Addressing Systemic Issues: The graduate assistant will develop skills to address complex, systemic issues within the education landscape, such as improving the UM-AA 4S program design, by using data-driven academic strategies to demonstrate that selected academic strategies are interconnected and contribute significantly to academic advancement, career choice, and student engagement. Gain practice in the realm of possibilities that point to influencing a student's ability to succeed in both their educational and personal life, impacting their academic performance, career choices, and involvement in campus activities (i.e., self-authorship and leadership development).
