Job Description

The Office of New Student Programs (ONSP) seeks one student to fulfill the Orientation Student Coordinator, Logistics position. Orientation Student Coordinators serve in senior-level student leadership roles within the orientation program. This position is an essential role on the orientation team, and will work to support the development and delivery of orientation programs and content throughout for new students and family members.  OSCs will participate in the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of entry-level student staff.  In addition to working closely with the orientation staff, the role will also have substantial administrative responsibilities to aid in the program's functioning and ONSP day-to-day operations. The primary focus of this role is Orientation Logistics. OSCs will spend 75% of their time working on orientation related duties and the other 25% on their functional duties. This position will work cohesively with professional staff in ONSP to administer orientation content and experiences designed to welcome new students and families to the U-M community.   

Responsibilities of the Orientation Student Coordinator, Logistics position include: 

 

  • Will support overall needs for the behind-the-scenes logistics for Orientation (room checks) 

  • Will help with program set-up and take-down, and orientation prep work (includes creating signs, bag packing and storage room prep). 

  •  Will work closely as a peer supervisor of the Orientation Support + Logistics team, including assisting with hiring, training and staff meetings

  • Will assist with other duties as assigned as it relates to functional area

  • Needs to know and understand campus (like buildings, street names, and landmarks, abbreviations, room locations, and schedule familiarity)

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, pass a motor vehicle record authorization, and possess the ability to drive a university vehicle

Other Student Coordinator Responsibilities: 

 

 

  • Participate in weekly meetings with fellow orientation student coordinators, the graduate intern, and ONSP professional staff.

  • Attend one-on-one meetings with your supervisor. 

  • Work may require the ability to lift and move items up to 50lbs

  • Represents the Office of New Student Programs throughout the orientation program, recruitment events, and serve as a knowledgeable source of campus information

  • Establish and build rapport with student staff members over the winter, spring, and summer

  • Assist in the delivery of in-person programs to welcome new students and their families to the U-M community during orientation programs. 

  • Assist in the facilitation of Michigan Orientation Leader Training and Retreat (MOTAR).

  • Participate in the recruitment, interviews, and selection of orientation logistics support team members.

  • Serve as a team leader for a group of logistics support team members by conducting regular meetings and one-on-ones with assigned staff members, and serve as point of first contact for support during programs and events.  

  • Assist in developing the MOTAR training structure and present training sessions to prepare this group for their role. 

  • Assist in the facilitation of in-person programs held by ONSP throughout the winter, spring and summer. 

  • Attend regular staff meetings including student coordinator meetings, student coordinator trainings, and orientation leader training and meetings.

  • Collaborate across primary focus areas to support and assist with the overall orientation programming (Training, Retreat, Welcome to Michigan Event, etc)

Additional Information:

This position will work during the winter, spring, and summer semesters in preparation for the delivery of the orientation program during May, June, July and August. Student Coordinators can be sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduating seniors. You must have student leadership experience; orientation leader experience preferred. Applicants must be available to work in-person from the start of hire until September 8, 2026.

Qualifications: 

 

  • Must be able to work in-person during the winter, spring, and summer terms

  • Must have student leadership skills and/or hold a student leadership role on campus

  • Must be in good academic standing

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, pass a motor vehicle record authorization, and possess the ability to drive a university vehicle

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Comfort with speaking in front of others, in both large and small groups 

  • Ability to work independently on detail-oriented projects

  • A thorough understanding of campus resources and services

  • Access to a personal computer with a reliable internet connection, camera, and phone

  • Familiarity with Michigan orientation programs

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Experience leading, supervising, or mentoring peers

  • Comfort with Excel or Google Sheets

Time Commitment:

  • The position has an end date of September 8, 2026. 

  • Time commitment for this position is as follows:

    • Winter Semester: February 9 - April 27

    • Summer Semester: April  27 - September 8

  • Will work in winter, spring, summer, and the beginning of fall semesters.

  • Winter semester hours will be between 5-10 hours a week with a few opportunities to work more during recruiting events and student selection and hiring. 

  • Hours will increase to 30-40 hours from May to August (with the opportunity for some work in September).

  • Staff will be assigned regular shifts Monday through Friday between 8 am - 5 pm but will occasionally participate in activities that fall outside of these hours which can include nights and weekends.

 

Hourly Rate $18.25/hour
