HSF provides a unique opportunity for a group of upper-division Honors students (usually rising seniors) pursuing a Honors thesis or HELA (Honors in Engaged Liberal Arts) project to gather from across all major categories of LSA: the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Participants learn from one another about the nature of research across a wide range of disciplines, comparing the modes of work, nature of valid evidence, styles of presentation, and special challenges. Students are awarded $10,000 for the eight-week, Ann Arbor-based program. As a mentor, your duty is to guide Fellows in the progression of their goals for the fellowship and for their research project. Duties may be as follows: Scheduling regular 1-on-1 meetings with your “Pod” members (~6-8 students) to discuss their learning goals, accomplishments, and setbacks. Attending weekly meetings to plan activities and course materials for the following week. Developing and teaching an individualized curriculum on research techniques for weekly seminars with your “pods.” This can be done alongside input from Fellows. Assisting the Director of the LSA Honors Program and other mentors with course materials and instruction for larger weekly seminars with the entire cohort. Hosting office hours outside of required 1-on-1 meetings in order to provide greater support to Fellows. Building community through organizing fun and interesting events with Fellows. Providing timely feedback for weekly assignments. Liaise with the University community to host guest speakers for weekly seminars.
HSF Mentors will be awarded a stipend of $12,000 paid as salary. LSA Honors graduates (by May 2026) are eligible, but we strongly encourage 2025 Summer Fellows to apply. |
