Job Description

Purpose:

The Group Tutoring Coordinator is a peer leader who serves as both an active OMSE tutor and a coordinator for group tutoring offerings in the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE). This position supports medical students academically and administratively, providing collaborative learning opportunities, organizing group review sessions, and ensuring continuity between coordinators. As a coordinator, you may be matched to one or more of the following roles: M1 Group Tutoring Coordinator, M2 Group Tutoring Coordinator, or EKG Group Tutoring Coordinator.

M1 Group Tutoring Coordinator

For the past 6 years, group tutoring in the Scientific Trunk has been one of our most popular offerings. Typically held weekly, the goal is to create a safe space for students to ask questions and engage in active learning on the content they've been working on during the week. End-of-quarter review sessions are also held, sometimes topic-specific or overarching block reviews.

The coordinator does not necessarily hold/lead the sessions (though most organizers did lead some of the sessions), but rather organizes the tutors and the M1 sign-ups. There are several artifacts from predecessors to help organize. The new coordinator(s) will work closely with the outgoing coordinator(s) to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in session materials and format.

M2 Group Tutoring Coordinator

Organizing group shelf reviews has been piloted for the past 3 years. With each iteration growing in breadth of offerings and consistency of support. Because our tutors represent a variety of specialty interests across 15 tracks, there have been times when we cannot provide coverage for all exams or topics. However, the group reviews prior to Shelf exams we have been able to host have been helpful, per student feedback. There are artifacts for this position as well, but not as robust as the M1 materials.

EKG Group Tutoring Coordinator

The coordinator is responsible for leading EKG review sessions for the CCA. The incoming coordinator will work closely with the outgoing coordinator to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in session materials and format. Unlike other group tutoring coordinator roles, this coordinator will be holding sessions. Because of that, candidates should have a strong understanding of EKG fundamentals, an interest in medical education, and a willingness to support students in other content areas as needed. Previous experience in tutoring, mentoring, or educational support roles is preferred but not required.

OMSE Tutor Role

As a group tutoring coordinator, you will also be a regular OMSE tutor. The role of the tutor is to act as a learning catalyst and positive role model through the Scientific and Clinical Trunk curricula. An OMSE tutor facilitates the learning process, filling content gaps as needed, assessing/modifying the tutee’s reasoning and problem-solving skills, and encouraging effective learning strategies. When working with tutees, tutors are encouraged to stimulate critical thinking, foster an understanding of the "big picture," and assist students in becoming active participants in the learning process. Additionally, tutors should work with tutees to practice integrating and applying knowledge.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with outgoing coordinators for smooth transitions and use of existing resources to create an effective iteration for the upcoming academic year

  • Organize and schedule regular group tutoring sessions based on the curricular calendar, student, and tutor availability

  • Communicate session details, changes, and important announcements to tutors and students

  • Track attendance, maintain accurate records of tutoring activities, and compile reports for program assessment

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for tutor and student inquiries related to group sessions

  • Lead sessions for specific areas (e.g., EKG review) as needed

  • All regular Tutor Responsibilities, please review the Tutor job description as well

Educational Value

As a Group Tutoring Coordinator, students will gain valuable experience at the intersection of medical education, peer mentorship, and academic leadership. This role offers the opportunity to:

  1. Develop Leadership & Organizational Skills: Coordinating tutoring sessions and managing teams of peer tutors enhances abilities in logistics, communication, and resource management, which are critical skills for any future physician or educator.

  2. Deepen Medical Knowledge: Assisting peers with complex concepts and leading targeted review sessions strengthens the coordinator’s own mastery of curricular content, clinical reasoning, and exam preparation strategies.

  3. Cultivate Teaching & Mentoring Expertise: Facilitating group learning environments and providing individualized support refines educational techniques, empathy, and the ability to explain difficult topics clearly.

  4. Promote Collaboration & Professionalism: Working closely with students, faculty, and staff fosters strong professional relationships and collaborative problem-solving within diverse teams.

  5. Enhance Confidence & Communication: Regularly interacting with peers and guiding group discussions builds confidence, hones public speaking and active listening skills, and encourages intellectual curiosity.

This position is ideal for students seeking an enriching, hands-on leadership experience that not only strengthens their own learning but also empowers others, preparing them for lifelong roles in teaching, mentoring, and professional collaboration.
