Job Description

MICHIGAN YOUTH ENSEMBLES – Ensemble Manager

The Michigan Youth Ensembles (MYE) Ensemble Manager is a pivotal member of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s MYE program. MYE Ensemble Managers are assigned to one (1) of MYE’s seven performing ensembles and will assist Engagement & Outreach Staff with the weekly operations of said ensemble throughout the MYE Season. MYE Ensemble Managers monitor MYE rehearsals and performances and serve as the go-to source for the ensemble’s conductor to ensure all facets of their assigned MYE ensemble run smoothly throughout the year. 

 

Part Time: September 08, 2026 – April 11, 2027 

Assignment Duration: Sundays, time TBD depending on ensemble placement. 

Compensation: $15 - $18 per hour, with additional compensation provided by the Engagement & Outreach Office

Reports to: Youth and Adult Program (YAP) Manager / the Office of Engagement & Outreach 

 

Review of applicants will begin on February 23, 2026, with qualified candidates being contacted for interviews. 

 

PRE-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Attend mandatory MYE Ensemble Manager / Mentor Orientation (3:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30th, 2026). 

SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Be present for all MYE rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances (included in their assigned ensemble’s season calendar provided upon acceptance of the position). 

 Set up equipment (i.e., chairs, stands, podiums) for all MYE weekly rehearsals, performances, and events.

 Check-in/track attendance for all MYE musicians at weekly rehearsals, performances, and events, including follow-up calls as needed w/ students and families. 

 Document any individual issues regarding MYE students pertaining to attendance, music needs, etc. 

 Assist with the setup of special MYE events, including but not limited to: MYE parent meetings, sectionals, masterclasses, etc.

 Submit weekly rehearsal reports to the YAP Manager. 

 Assist the YAP Manager in special MYE projects, including but not limited to: social events, senior recognition, etc.

 At the director’s discretion, assist with other ensemble-related activities, including but not limited to: sectionals, ensemble warm-ups, masterclass organization, etc. 

 Other duties as assigned. 

PERCUSSION MANAGERS ONLY 

 Assist with MYE student part assignments as requested for each concert cycle. 

 Coordinate with SMTD Staff regarding percussion moves for annual performances and events. 

POSTSEASON RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Assist with a minimum of one (1) MYE Season Audition day for the 2027-28 Season held April 10th and April 11th, 2027.

 Shifts worked beyond the required one will afford managers additional compensation. 

 Other duties as assigned.

Educational Value

The MYE Ensemble Manager position allows students the opportunity to understand the logistical behind-the-scenes work involved in managing a thriving youth ensembles program. This will help students hone their administrative skills that they can use in tandem with their classroom skills while working music education related positions.

Job Requirements
  • A current music major at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, of at least sophomore standing as of the Fall 2026 semester.
  • Personable, highly organized, and superb communication skills.
Hourly Rate $15.00/hour to $18.00/hour
