Center Support and Projects Student Lead

About Spectrum Center: Spectrum Center is a campus resource center dedicated to serving and supporting the University of Michigan community, with a focus on gender and sexuality. Founded in 1971, Spectrum Center is the first campus-based center of its kind. Through campus-wide education, research, and community building, the center staff work to enhance campus climate, increase belonging, and help students thrive. We serve and support members of the U-M's LGBTQIA2S+ communities and strive to create a campus where people of all sexualities and genders are welcome, included, and valued.

 

About the Position: The Center Support and Projects Student Lead will provide support covering the front desk of the office throughout the week, performing administrative work for the office, representing Spectrum Center at outreach events such as Campus Days, and supporting other projects and events as needed. This position will work with both administrative and program staff, gaining experience working in a large team with a variety of different roles. This position will also support joint outreach initiatives and events hosted with Spectrum Center’s close partners, coordinating work as needed with members of other offices. Preference is for availability in early morning and some evenings. 

 

 

Job Summary/Responsibilities
 

Office Reception and Coverage Support (40%)

? Receive visitors to Spectrum Center and answer Spectrum Center office phone

? Provide knowledgeable support to visitors to office

? Maintain office use and supply records

? Provide support and coverage for other shift leads throughout week

 

Tabling and Outreach Support (40%)

? Attend outreach events such as resource fairs to represent Spectrum Center and answer questions about Center’s work

? Promote upcoming events to students and campus community members

? Check and maintain supplies for outreach in tabling box and other center storage

? Transport tabling box to and from on campus events when necessary

 

All Staff Responsibilities (20%) 

? Support Spectrum Center tabling at outreach events 2-4 times per month according to need

? Attend monthly all staff meetings

? Other projects as to be defined by  Office Coordinator

? Attend Spectrum Center, Student Life, and University-wide professional development opportunities

Educational Value

Educational Value: The Center Support and Projects Lead will develop skills in outreach and communication, working with individual visitors to the center to provide assistance as well as with large groups at outreach events to effectively field questions and promote our work. Working in this position will require being a part of a large and complex office team, gaining skill in coordinating with team members and working in separate but interlocking roles to complete projects. This position will also allow the person in it to gain greater familiarity with resource and support work in a resource center.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled student for Winter 2026 semester

  • Capacity to work some early morning (starting at 7:00 am) and weekend hours

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Basic understanding of LGBTQ+ communities and identities

Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
Hours 6.0 to 10.0 hours per week
