Job Description

The Climbing Center Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for students and guests at the Hadley Climbing Center. The purpose of this role is to support daily facility operations while providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive experience for participants. Students in this position assist with front desk operations, customer support, and basic facility oversight under the supervision of professional staff.

Primary duties include checking in participants, verifying required waivers, assisting with equipment rentals, and completing point-of-sale transactions. Climbing Center Assistants provide orientation to facility policies and safety expectations, answer participant questions, and help maintain an organized and professional front desk environment. Additional responsibilities include assisting with daily opening and closing procedures, supporting programs and events as directed, monitoring the facility for safety and security concerns, and contributing to a positive community atmosphere within the climbing center.

Educational Value

This position provides students with meaningful, hands-on professional experience in a structured and supervised university recreation setting. Students develop strong customer service and communication skills through daily interaction with peers, faculty, staff, and community members. They gain experience working in an operational environment that emphasizes professionalism, attention to detail, and responsibility.

Students also learn transferable skills including time management, teamwork, conflict resolution, and situational awareness. Through training and mentorship, students are introduced to basic principles of risk awareness, facility operations, and inclusive community engagement. Experience with point-of-sale systems, policy communication, and front-facing service prepares students for future roles in recreation, education, hospitality, public service, and student leadership.

Job Requirements

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and be able to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. The position requires strong customer service and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow established procedures and safety guidelines.
