Job Description

The Climbing Center Coordinator serves as a student leadership role within the Hadley Climbing Center, supporting both daily operations and long-term program development. The purpose of this position is to bridge the gap between entry-level student staff and professional staff by providing leadership, instructional support, and administrative assistance within the Adventure Leadership program.

Primary responsibilities include supporting staff scheduling and shift coverage, assisting with or teaching instructional classes, orientations, and clinics, and conducting belay and lead tests with consistency and accuracy. Coordinators support training and onboarding of new student employees, assist with risk management, emergency response, and incident reporting, and help develop and implement climbing programs, events, and outreach initiatives. The role also includes administrative support related to staffing coordination, communication, and facility operations, all under the guidance of professional staff.

Educational Value

This position provides high-level educational and professional development for students pursuing leadership roles in recreation, education, or student affairs. Students gain experience in instructional delivery, peer leadership, scheduling coordination, and program development within a structured university environment.

Coordinators develop advanced communication, teaching, and facilitation skills while learning to support staff training and onboarding. The role strengthens skills in organization, decision-making, risk awareness, and administrative coordination. Through mentorship from professional staff, students gain insight into program planning, operations management, and leadership within a collegiate recreation setting. These experiences prepare students for future careers in recreation management, education, student leadership, public service, and related fields.

Job Requirements

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and hold First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. Lead belay certification is required or must be obtained within the first semester of employment. The position requires demonstrated leadership experience, strong teaching and communication skills, and the ability to manage scheduling and staff support tasks.

Students must be comfortable working in an active climbing environment, including standing and walking for extended periods, assisting with instructional demonstrations, and performing light physical tasks related to equipment handling. Availability to work 10–15 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, is required. All responsibilities are performed with training, guidance, and oversight from professional staff.
