Job Description
UMICH Votes is seeking a cohort of three Communications Interns to support campus-wide nonpartisan voter engagement and civic participation in advance of the 2026 election cycle. These positions are designed for students interested in social media, storytelling, and civic engagement who want hands-on experience producing student-centered content within a large, nonpartisan university initiative.
 
The Communications Interns will work collaboratively as a small team and in close coordination with UMICH Votes staff and UMICH Votes Coalition partners to:
 
  • amplify student voices, to promote awareness of voting resources 
  • capture voting-inspired moments across campus
  • help ensure that University of Michigan students have access to clear, accurate, and vetted nonpartisan voting information.
 
Interns will contribute to content creation for the UMICH Votes Instagram, assist with event coverage at UMICH Votes programming and at the Campus Voting Hubs, and help identify trends and opportunities to connect UMICH Votes messaging to student culture and campus life.
 
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Creating engaging, student-centered nonpartisan content for UMICH Votes social media platforms (with a focus on Instagram)
  • Capturing photo and video content at the Campus Voting Hubs, campus events, and UMICH Votes Coalition programming across Central and North Campus
  • Appearing on camera when appropriate to support peer-to-peer nonpartisan messaging
  • Gathering student testimonials and documenting campus voting experiences
  • Assisting with content planning to ensure sustained output during peak election season periods
  • Coordinating with UMICH Votes staff and other coalition partners to align messaging
  • Identifying campus events and moments where a UMICH Votes presence would be effective
  • Supporting nonpartisan, vetted messaging in accordance with University and coalition guidelines
  • Other communications-related tasks as assigned
Educational Value
The Communications Interns will gain practical experience in social media strategy, content creation, and collaborative communications work within a large institutional setting. Interns will learn to: 
  • translate complex civic information into accessible, student-facing content, 
  • work within nonpartisan communication frameworks
  • collaborate with professional staff and student organizations. 
The position offers meaningful exposure to civic engagement efforts while developing transferable skills relevant to careers in communications, media, marketing, public service, and design.

Job Requirements
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Michigan in good standing
  • Strong interest in communications, social media, storytelling, and civic engagement
  • Commitment to non-partisanship and non-partisan civic education
  • Familiarity with Instagram
  • Strong written communication skills and an eye for tone and clarity
  • Comfort working independently and as part of a small, collaborative team
  • Dependable, organized, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to commit to a consistent schedule each semester
  • Video editing, photography, or design experience is a plus, but not required
  • Candidates from all majors and backgrounds are encouraged to apply
Hourly Rate $17.00/hour
Hours 12.0 hours per week
