Job Description

The LSA International Institute (II) is seeking a Communications and Social Media Assistant to provide support and contribute to the institute’s content and social media strategy.

This part-time position offers 8-12 hours per week, with flexible scheduling based on student class commitments. The role includes opportunities for additional hours as needed.

Duties include:

  • Creating engaging content and scheduling posts (via a social media tool) for different social media platforms to promote events and activities at the II
  • Using Adobe Express, Canva, or any video and graphics app to produce visuals/content
  • Engage with II students and faculty to conduct interviews and develop promotional content for student, course, and event spotlights
  • Attending II events (when schedule allows) and recording short clips for promo video and content
  • Creating event entries on the Happening@Michigan calendar
  • Distributing and posting printed materials (posters or flyers) around campus according to a provided list
  • Assisting with special projects and other duties as assigned

 

Educational Value

Students will gain hands-on experience with office procedures and university policies in higher education. This position will offer an opportunity to strengthen communication, organizational, and creative skills while contributing to real-world marketing and social media projects. By working as part of a professional team, students will also develop an understanding of design, branding, content creation, and audience engagement strategies, preparing them for future roles in design and communications or related fields.

Job Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Familiarity with professional social media protocols and the U-M brand
  • Strong interest and experience in international studies, writing or creating content, and familiarity with graphic design
  • Experience with creating content for various media campaigns (posts, stories, reels, or clips) and communication plans/schedules for different social media platforms
  • Excellent attention to detial
  • Ability to prioritize effectively in a deadline-sensitive environment
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Demonstrated creativity and success in generating engagement on social media platforms

Application Instructions and Requirements:

Resume: Highlight relevant experience and skills related to social media and creating content; e.g. static, animated, or video. List specific software and applications you are familiar with, such as Google Suite, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office, or any design and social media management tools you have used.

Availability: Outline your available work hours based on your class schedule. Please note that this position will require you to be on location at least 4 hours/week.

Social Media Sample Posts: Provide links to sample posts or a PDF portfolio of examples of your work, such as engaging posts, stories, reels, or short clips.

Required Task (Submit with Application): Complete a short task demonstrating skills relevant to this position.

Task: Promote the 2026 II Photo Contest

Background: The International Institute hosts a photo contest open to U-M students from the three campuses and affiliated with the institute and its centers and programs. The contest celebrates global learning, international experiences, and the different ways the students engage with and see the world. 

Objective: Create an Instagram post promoting the 2026 II Photo Contest and encouraging students to submit their photos.
