This project will be a joint research effort between Anna Rohl, Map Curator, and a student research assistant to capture what documentation exists about a 100 year old map of campus by U-M alumna Jessie Horton Koessler and artist Gertrude A. Strickler in order to highlight how the map fits into campus history (specifically the construction of the League) and the history of pictorial maps in the US. After researching archival collections related to Koessler’s map held by Bentley Library, the research assistant will help write, design, and install an exhibit in the Clark LIbrary rotunda about the map.
The research assistant will gain experience doing archival, primary source research and, by the end of the project, be a co-author of an exhibit here in Clark Library. Ideally, this project will lay the groundwork for a co-authored publication in a scholarly journal or professional trade publication.
