Student Service Assistant with Michigan Housing INTRODUCTION: The Lawyers Club Desk is the main service desk for the Lawyers Club which provides dependable/professional service to residents, faculty, staff, alumni and guests of the Law Community. It is also the central point for service, direction, resource and assistance to our campus partners. As part of the Clubs’ team, the Student Service Assistants work closely with building team partners in Facilities, MDining and Student Life. Direct supervision is provided by the Clubs’ Administrative Assistant and indirectly by the Clubs’ Program Manager. TIME COMMITMENT: Student Services Assistants are expected to meet the expectations and responsibilities of the position through the time commitments listed below. Michigan Housing recognizes that SSAs have other academic, personal, and professional time commitments as well. The Student Services Assistant supervisor is available to discuss strategies to help balance the SSA responsibilities with other time commitments as needed. Student Services Assistants are expected to work at least one weekday evening or weekend desk shift. Acceptance of the position is an acceptance of a commitment to work as scheduled throughout each semester. In this residential setting, hours of assignment may include move-in and move-out as well as responsibilities during weekends and evenings. Student employees will be expected to share hours to cover the needs of the Main Desk and mail/package processing. Student employees are also asked to provide a copy of their class schedule and any recurring commitments such as clinic, journals or additional positions. The SSA can expect to work various hours across seven days each week to ensure that the LC Main Desk is open to meet the community’s needs. This includes: Morning, evening and weekend shifts, scheduled each semester. Support gaps in coverage during breaks, such as Fall Break, November Break, and Winter/Spring Break. The SSA will be scheduled a minimum of 6 hours a week. Students should plan to work additional hours during training periods, as well as during Opening and Closing of the residential buildings, and as requested by their supervisor(s). Actual hours may vary depending on the needs of the desk and the SSA’s availability. It is important to note that the SSA cannot exceed 29 on-campus employment hours per week. SSAs are expected to attend an in-person once per month on Tuesday nights from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM. Tuesday night meeting dates are subject to change due to events, such as academic calendar breaks. If this occurs, the SSAA will receive prior notice from the Administrative Assistant and the meeting must remain a priority.
SSAs are expected to submit time-off requests to their Administrative Assistant at least two weeks in advance whenever possible. Approval of time off is contingent upon staffing needs, training schedules, and key community events such as Opening and Closing. Requests made with less notice may not be approved, except in cases of emergency. - This position is available for the Fall/Winter terms. Specific dates are in alignment with Michigan Law’s academic calendar.
RESPONSBILITIES: Provide Information to students and visitors on University, Lawyers Club, and Law School policies, services, and programs. Provide direction and information to appropriate student services departments (SFO, CAPS, UHS, FIN-AID, Career Services, Law Clinics, Admissions, etc…) Perform routine administrative tasks related to Law School Student Services and Lawyers Club programs. Provide assistance to alumni, guests, and visitors checking in/out of the Lawyers Club guest room/hotel service (accepting payment, authorizing charge purchases using Visa and MasterCard). Execute the lock up of the Service Area, including responsibility for locking down the office suites and service desk. Answer phones/relay messages to other administrative staff and residents. Have knowledge of the Law School’s Campus, Calendar, and Activities. Work in a manner that enhances an inclusive and supportive community. Create an approachable and service-oriented environment by prioritizing assistance to residents and desk responsibilities over classwork and other secondary priorities. Take ownership in serving as an effective resource for all inquiries, while maintaining a positive attitude. Demonstrate team-supportive behavior. Maintain timely and constant communication with the supervisor. Manage confidential information in a secure and sensitive manner. Learn effective operation of all University-owned equipment. Accept, process and distribute mail/packages and deliveries to students and staff per provided protocol. Respond to telephone, email, and in-person inquiries in a timely manner with quality service skills, and follow-up to ensure resolution. Lock and secure required service areas, as needed to ensure resident safety, the security of sensitive information and technology. Follow proper procedures set by MHousing Security Supervisors regarding the key management systems in the distribution of keys/cards during room check-in/check-out ,lock-outs, service calls. Attend to detail in all administrative functions, including opening/closing procedures and Maintaining records and logs to ensure accurate and timely completion. Assist in the preparation and facilitation of Move-in and Move-out procedures. Model personal behavior that is consistent with the University Housing mission, Community Living Standards, Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities. Comply with University of Michigan and University Housing policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements |
Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate, undergraduate, or professional student at the University of Michigan. Priority in hiring will be given to Michigan Law students Undergraduate Student Staff members must be enrolled and complete at least 8 credit hours each semester that they are appointed and graduate Student Staff members (Masters/Certificates) must be enrolled and complete at least 6 credit hours each semester they are appointed. Ph.D. candidate student staff members must provide proof of enrollment each semester they are appointed. Must be in good standing with Student Life and the University. This includes upholding all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the MHousing Community Living at Michigan, the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibility, and any other applicable University policies and procedures. Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws. Housing Student Conflict Resolution, Housing Student Employment Work Record, University Records, and the Office of Student Conflict Resolution records will be checked to determine if an applicant is eligible to be hired for a student position. Final position offers are contingent upon verification of background check. Must adhere to all roles, responsibilities, and expectations for the entire duration of the appointment. Due to the nature of their responsibilities, SSAs are not required to live in Michigan Housing. SSAs will not be eligible to hold other Residence Education student positions during their SSA appointment.
