Course Details

  • SI 630 introduces foundational and advanced concepts in Natural Language Processing (NLP), covering probabilistic and statistical models, machine learning methods, and deep neural networks (e.g., recurrent networks and transformers), alongside linguistic analysis of morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse, and pragmatics. 

  • Students complete programming-intensive assignments in Python, applying mathematical foundations such as linear algebra and probability to implement and evaluate NLP systems. 

  • The course also integrates human and social dimensions of language technologies, including data annotation, bias, and sociolinguistics, to ensure students understand both the technical and societal implications of NLP methods.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications: 

  • Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or equivalent knowledge of the subject matter

  • Demonstrated proficiency in machine learning and natural language processing, including experience implementing models in Python (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar frameworks). 

  • Strong background in probability, linear algebra, and algorithmic thinking required. Prior coursework or research experience in NLP, deep learning, or computational linguistics is preferred.
