Purpose:

The OMSE peer-to-peer tutoring program aims to empower medical students through individualized academic support, leadership development, and mentorship. By fostering a collaborative environment rooted in professionalism and effective communication, the program enables tutors to deepen their medical knowledge, refine teaching skills, and build confidence—while simultaneously enriching the learning experiences of their peers. Through one-on-one interactions (optional group interaction) and personalized guidance, OMSE tutors prepare themselves and their fellow students for lifelong roles as educators, mentors, and compassionate clinicians.

OMSE Tutor Job Description:

The role of the tutor is to act as a learning catalyst and positive role model through the Scientific and Clinical Trunk curricula. An OMSE tutor facilitates the learning process, filling content gaps as needed, assessing/modifying the tutee’s reasoning and problem-solving skills, and encouraging effective learning strategies. When working with tutees, tutors are encouraged to stimulate critical thinking, foster an understanding of the "big picture," and assist students in becoming active participants in the learning process. Additionally, tutors should work with tutees to practice integrating and applying knowledge.

  1. Develop Mentorship & Organizational Skills: Coordinating tutoring sessions and managing teams of peer tutors enhances abilities in logistics, communication, and resource management, which are critical skills for any future physician and/or medical educator.

  2. Deepen Medical Knowledge: Assisting peers with complex concepts and providing individualized review reinforces the tutor’s own mastery of curricular content, clinical reasoning, and exam preparation strategies.

  3. Cultivate Teaching & Mentoring Expertise: Offering personalized guidance and support refines educational techniques, empathy, and the ability to explain difficult topics clearly on an individual basis.

  4. Promote Collaboration & Professionalism: Working closely with fellow students and staff fosters strong professional relationships and collaborative problem-solving.

  5. Enhance Confidence & Communication: Engaging in regular peer interactions builds confidence, sharpens communication and active listening skills, and encourages intellectual curiosity.
