Job Description

Overview:

The LSA Language Resource Center annually employees 10-12 Temporary Media Assistants.  LRC Temporary Media Assistants are typically currently enrolled UM students (primarily undergraduates, but on rare occasion graduate students). Job duties fall generally into multiple categories, depending on student workers’ schedules, skills, and unit needs, and includes participation in a Special Project.

 

LRC Reservation Office:

Duties include: check–out circulating media; assist faculty with computers, software, audio, and video equipment; check-out/check-in/organize/re-shelve library materials (videos, books, CDs, and other resources); troubleshoot equipment and notify appropriate senior staff of problems; train on proper usage of equipment; enter advanced reservations into computer system; print out reports and prepare office for daily interactions, send overdue notices; search catalogs to find requested materials; communicate with reservation office on course reserves and policy issues; intake personal items for reserve use; answer phone and email requests; clean office and equipment; apply (and inform faculty and students of ) LRC and University policies regarding copyright and fair use of materials, and direct more complex questions to senior staff.

  • Weekly Languages@Michigan Newsletter, Social Media Management, LRC Anniversary Timeline, Semester Statistics Reports, Digital Games Inventory, Event Planning, etc.

Educational Value

Students will gain experience working in an administrative capacity in support of faculty members - understanding how they gather material for class integration and discussion and navigating the backend of resource acquisition. They will also exercise customer service in supporting patrons’ needs and requests in-center, whether in circulating materials or providing technical assistance. Additionally, this position calls for participation in planning and staffing events giving insight into the inner-workings of event management.  Applicants with experience in a second or third language will also have the opportunity to utilize and maintain their skill by participating in translation events and proofreading translated documents, if they so desire.

Job Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Some college; Inventory and customer service experience; Prior experience working with faculty and undergraduate clientele; World language experience; Able to work independently and in teams; Able to take initiative, think creatively, and solve problems; Interest in libraries and world language

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma;  Familiarity and high degree of comfort with computers and digital equipment; Experience with basic productivity software (Word, Excel, E-mail, Netscape); Demonstrated qualities in the following areas: 1) commitment and enthusiasm for customer service; 2) excellent communication skills; 3) strong organizational skills; 4) ability to undertake multiple tasks at the same time; 5) enthusiasm to learn new skills and take on new projects;  6) strong record of consistent attendance and performance in prior work settings.
