Job Description

AI Inside and Out is a summer camp designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence through interactive activities and hands-on experiences. Camp Counselors play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for participants. While no prior AI or engineering knowledge is required, counselors are responsible for managing logistics, guiding students between activities, and providing general support to ensure a positive camp environment.

Working Dates

  • Counselor training: June 8 – 9

  • Session 1: June 22 – 26

  • Session 2: July 6 – 10

  • Session 3: July 20 – 24

  • Session 4: August 3 – 7

  • Session 5: August 17 – 21

You would not be expected to work outside of these date ranges during the summer.

Before the summer camp sessions begin, there is an optional opportunity to assist with workshops designed for local high school students during Winter semester. These workshops take place in the Beyster Building and focus on topics such as Metrology, Digital Design, or AI and Machine Learning. Each workshop lasts 4 to 6 hours and introduces the same activities that are featured in the summer camps, allowing assistants to become familiar with the material. Participation in these workshops is not mandatory, but can provide valuable experience and preparation for the summer role. Compensation for assisting with these workshops is at the same rate as the summer counselor position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Escort students between scheduled activities and ensure they arrive on time.

  • Maintain the daily schedule and assist in transitions between sessions.

  • Ensure students have the necessary materials and supplies for each activity.

  • Provide general supervision and support to create a safe and inclusive camp environment.

  • Answer basic logistical questions (e.g., bathroom locations, lunch schedules).

  • Assist instructors and staff with minor setup and cleanup tasks.

  • Monitor student engagement and report any issues to camp leadership.

  • Uphold camp policies and maintain a respectful and welcoming atmosphere.

Educational Value

This role provides valuable hands-on experience in leadership, communication, and event coordination, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in education, STEM outreach, or youth programming. Camp Counselors will gain:

  • Leadership & Teamwork Skills – Experience in managing groups of students, coordinating schedules, and working alongside instructors and fellow counselors.

  • Communication & Problem-Solving – Practice in giving clear instructions, addressing student questions, and adapting to unexpected challenges.

  • Organizational & Time Management Skills – Keeping camp activities running smoothly by ensuring students arrive on time and have the materials they need.

  • Youth Engagement Experience – Learning how to create a positive and inclusive environment for young learners, which is valuable for those considering careers in education or mentorship.

  • Event & Program Coordination – Gaining firsthand experience in assisting with a structured program, learning the logistics of running educational events.

This position is a great fit for students looking to develop professional and interpersonal skills in a dynamic, hands-on setting.
