Job Summary

The Digital Water Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a summer employee to assist with the expansion and monitoring of our sensor node network and water quality monitoring programs. Our group has developed and maintains a network of over 100 wireless water sensors to study urban water systems across Michigan and the United States. The tech will support field deployments and will help build devices. Having employees with different life experiences and backgrounds is critical to ensure the exchange of diverse ideas that is called for in training tomorrow’s scientists. Underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Duties
  • Assist the team in building, installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment to keep the remote sensor node network functional
  • Safe operation of UM vehicles
  • Deploying and retrieving of water sampling/measuring equipment
  • Assist with field and lab equipment maintenance

Duration

This is a part time summer position, depending on availability.  Start date May 2026, or possibly sooner, depending on availability.

Location

These positions are located on the North Campus at the University of Michigan and will involve travel mostly concentrated in SE Michigan. Some travel to other locations within Michigan may be required.

Compensation

Hourly rate begins at $22.00/hour and will commensurate with experience.

 

 

 

Educational Value

Job Requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Maintain positive attitude while conducting field work
  • Work in all safe weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Independent, self-motivated, and collaborative
  • Able to occasionally lift and move ~40 pounds, walk on uneven ground, and wade in streams
Hourly Rate $22.00/hour
