Job Description

The Nature of Engineering Work project team is seeking up to two student Media Assistants to support the translation of research on engineering work into accessible, practice-oriented resources. This project will focus on developing a short video (10 minutes or less) and/or a series of brief video/audio segments, along with a concise printable guide that can be used in instructional settings such as faculty development workshops, student programs, and engineering courses.

Our broader research examines the messages students receive about what “counts” as engineering work and how these messages shape students’ sense of fit, career thinking, and persistence in engineering. The goal of this phase of the project is to make key findings accessible and usable for educators and program leaders. Rather than producing a traditional research summary, we aim to create engaging, clear, and practically oriented media resources that can prompt reflection and discussion in instructional contexts.

Media Assistants will work closely with the research team to:

  • Translate research findings into an accessible narrative suitable for instructional settings

  • Develop and produce a short video and/or series of short segments (video or audio) with an informal, engaging tone

  • Edit video and/or audio content

  • Collaborate on the creation of a brief written guide to accompany the media resource, including suggestions for how it can be used in classes, trainings, or programs

  • Help explore format, structure, and design approaches that best support educator uptake

We anticipate hiring up to two students whose strengths may be complementary. Students with experience in video production, audio production, editing, scriptwriting, instructional design, visual communication, or related areas are encouraged to apply. You do not need to have strengths in all areas; if you have strong experience in some of these areas, you should apply.

Applicants should submit:

  • A brief cover letter describing relevant experience and interest in the role

  • A CV or resume

  • Samples of work (links to audio or video projects and/or writing samples)

This is an hourly position. Students can start during the academic term or begin in the summer. Work would be part-time during the academic term and could be part- or full-time during the summer. Hourly rate will range from $20-$25 per hour be commensurate with experience and academic level.

Students will participate in regular meetings with members of the research team and will have the opportunity to contribute ideas about format, structure, and dissemination of the final resources.

Review of applications will begin March 16 and continue until positions are filled. Applications can be sent to NEW-study@umich.edu.

Educational Value

Students in this role will gain experience translating research findings into accessible resources that can be leveraged in and to inform educational practice. With the support of the research team, students will hone their skills in communicating key research findings in a creative format appropriate for a variety of audiences and exploring how to best support the use of these resources in an educational setting.

Job Requirements

Required and Preferred Skills:

  • Experience creating and editing video and/or audio content (course projects, independent projects, or professional work)

  • Strong writing skills, particularly the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely

  • Ability to translate research-based ideas for non-research audiences

  • Comfort working collaboratively and incorporating feedback

Interest in engineering education, higher education, or STEM education contexts is helpful but not required
