Job Description |
Overview: Summer Program Facilitators (SPF) will help to stem off summer loss of learning that impacts the achievement gap for under-resourced youth. This is an 8-week position with a week of staff training and a week of wrap-up around a 6-week summer camp for students in rising 1st through rising 6th grades. SPFs help build students' social-emotional growth, critical thinking, and self-advocacy skills. They engage students in curriculum and enrichment activities that are crafted to meet the unique needs of the kids. Summer Associates will also help with food security. They will provide nutritious snacks and meals to summer camp participants, and also help run food distributions for under-resourced communities. The SPF position is made possible through a partnership with the AmeriCorps Summer Associate Program. Compensation & Hours: Commitment: Monday-Friday, 35 hours/week from June 15-August 7. Hours are typically 9:30-5:30 Mondays through Thursdays and Friday mornings, but vary by location Pay: $957.46 bi-weekly living allowance from AmeriCorps. CAN also provides $1,600 in rental assistance (paid either to a landlord or to the staff member directly). Together, this adds up to $19.39 per hour. Additional Pay: $1,565.08 education award or $276.64 cash stipend at the end of the summer position
Essential Job Duties- A. Education Programs - Participate in 1 week of team training to prepare for summer camp
- Help prepare space and materials for program
- Coordinate and facilitate social-emotional activities, academic lessons, projects, games, etc.
- Engage with children in small groups, large groups, and individually. Typically, a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children can be expected. In Summer Camp, work with children in rising 1st through rising 6th grades
- Provide academic support to students as needed
- Facilitate transition times from one activity to another
- Monitor student safety and behavior and provide responsible supervision
- Follow behavior management strategies/plans and work with team members to provide consistent and age-appropriate guidance
- Support enrichment group lesson facilitation and goals
- Prepare meals and snacks for the attending students
- Clean up the centers during and after program, including but not limited to taking out the trash, washing dishes, sweeping, mopping the floor, and sanitization protocols
- Participate in team debrief meetings after program
- Participate in the wrap-up week after summer camp concludes
B. Food Program - Unload deliveries and check food for quality
- Organize food to prepare for distribution
- Distribute items to families as needed
- Help maintain an inventory of pantry items
- At certain locations, answer the door, greet clients, answer the phone, and accompany clients in selecting food
- Utilize excellent customer service skills to create a welcoming environment where community members feel welcome and safe
- Communicate food pantry expectations with clients
- Input, record, and maintain client records in online databases as needed (i.e. Salesforce, Link2Feed)
- Assist with and take initiative in the general upkeep of the pantry area. This can include breaking down boxes, sweeping, mopping, cleaning shelves, refrigerators, and freezers, and the overall general clean-up of distribution and pantry areas

In this role, students work closely with elementary-aged students and community members from under-resourced communities. They build relationships, lead curriculum lessons, reduce summer learning loss, and directly impact food security. |
