Job Description

The College of Engineering Honors and Engagement Programs Office is seeking a Graduate Intern. The ideal candidate should be available for approximately 15-20 hours/week. This position offers opportunities in student development and integrative learning with STEM students. The Engineering Honors & Engagement Graduate Intern contributes to this vision by supporting programs that help students build community, develop leadership skills, and contribute to a better world. The Graduate Intern will join a supportive, dynamic team committed to collaborative problem solving. The Graduate Intern is encouraged to bring their own ideas and perspectives to help shape these programs.

 

The Graduate Intern will coordinate the Common Reading Experience for over 1600 incoming first-year engineering students. Additionally, they will support admissions and recruiting processes to generate interest for students who want to build their leadership skills in Michigan Engineering. The Graduate Intern will also have the opportunity to design workshops and trainings for our undergraduate student staff to better serve our students. Projects will include:

  • Common Reading Experience – Coordinate the book selection process, facilitate focus groups, manage arrangements with the keynote speaker, coordinate logistics for distributing books to 1600 incoming engineering students, manage media and communications, assess program effectiveness, and synthesize feedback into recommendations for future programming. (75%)

  • Admission/Recruiting work - Assist with admission and recruiting efforts of current UM Engineering students into the Honors students. This work will include design of workshops and materials. Assist with designing marketing materials and strategies to engage prospective Honors students. (10%)

  • Creation of Peer Advising Materials – Work alongside program staff to develop and deliver training for peer advisors, with an emphasis on fostering interpersonal and problem-solving skills among student leaders. (10%) 

  • Additional projects related to student engagement as assigned. (5%)

 

The Graduate Intern will have opportunities to network and collaborate with faculty, staff, and community partners across Michigan Engineering and the wider University.

Educational Value

Academic and co-curricular programming, event planning/management, project management, program assessment. This position is housed in Michigan Engineering, but does not require any STEM background (none of the staff in our office has an engineering degree!). The Graduate Intern will gain hands-on experience with project management methods, collaborative team practices, and learn principles of student leadership development and engagement. Previous experience with event planning or student activities is helpful, but not required. All necessary training will be provided.
