1. Direct Student Mentorship & Coaching Conduct regular 1-on-1 check-ins with assigned students to track research progress and academic well-being. Guide students through the graduate school exploration process, including identifying programs, understanding funding models, and mapping out application timelines. Provide feedback on professional materials such as CVs, Resumes, and Statements of Purpose.
2. Cohort Building & Workshop Facilitation Co-facilitate bi-weekly cohort meetings focused on "Research Readiness" (e.g., literature reviews, data management, or research ethics). Organize informal "Social-Academic" mixers to foster a sense of belonging among first-generation and underrepresented students. Develop workshops on navigating the University of Michigan’s research ecosystem.
3. Research Navigation Assist students in identifying and contacting faculty principal investigators (PIs) for research placements. Help students translate their classroom knowledge into practical research skills (e.g., lab protocols, archival methods, or qualitative coding). Monitor student-faculty dynamics and provide "troubleshooting" support if students face challenges in their research placements.
4. Administrative & Programmatic Support Assist the Program Director in tracking student milestones and collecting program evaluation data. Maintain a resource library (Canvas or Slack) of fellowships and Graduate School prep materials. Weekly meetings with the Program Director to discuss student progress, program planning, and other ongoing program tasks.
