Organizational Effectiveness Intern -Job Description

This position is available for the following semesters:

  • Rest of Winter 2026, Summer 2026, with possible continuation into Fall 2026 and beyond

DPSS Overview

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all U-M students, faculty, and staff, with an emphasis on community outreach, prevention, and education. Our reach spans the Ann Arbor campus and Michigan Medicine, as well as our Dearborn and Flint campuses.

The intern will support and report to the leads of Organizational Culture and Training. Responsibilities are outlined below. 

Intern Responsibilities

The intern will support organizational effectiveness within DPSS. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • This role supports our internal ~600 DPSS staff that encompass various public safety roles, including: dispatch, police, community engagement, hospital guest services, hospital security, housing security, museum security, emergency management, technology, strategic communications, and more!

  • The intern will get the exciting opportunity to support organizational effectiveness within DPSS.

  • This means you will focus on projects that help our internal employees within DPSS feel engaged and fulfilled in their work!

  • Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Co-facilitate the follow-up of the 2026 DPSS Employee Engagement Survey, including analyzing data, creating a report, presentations, and meeting with staff to review the information, along with a plan for positive change

  • Plan events for employee and community engagement, such as employee wellness days, celebrations, award ceremonies, retirements, and new employee welcome events

  • Utilize project management skills and help implement a project management system amongst individuals and teams

  • For events, lead our logistics, including printing documents, making name badges, taking notes, tracking attendance, and organizing documents for appropriate archival purposes

  • Organize, plan, and evaluate training and leadership development opportunities for internal DPSS staff, such as emotional intelligence, supervision 101, incident command response, etc. You don’t have to be the content expert, but you will help with the planning and execution of the training sessions.

  • As able, assist with data visualization to transfer our existing data into easily accessible tables and infographics, in coordination with teams such as technology, strategic communications, and human resources

  • Coordinate with Human Resources to assist in their recruiting processes, including career fairs, marketing tools, and applicant systems

  • Update spreadsheets through data entry, visualization, and AI tools

  • Assist in creating a platform that allows internal staff to send kudos to each other for gratitude and appreciation purposes

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of a DPSS-branded store for employees to purchase swag items from

  • Support staff with outstanding needs/additional support, including emergency management, Special Victims Unit, Student Advisory Board, and Special Events, including football games

  • Mariana Akasheh or Carmalita Yeizman will supervise the student in this role

  • She will provide guidance and support for the intern while giving them autonomy to work independently

  • Mariana will focus on giving consistent feedback that is specific to the intern’s desired professional and personal development goals

Duration of Internship

  • Rest of Winter 2026, Summer 2026, with possible continuation into Fall 2026 and beyond

  • On average, the intern will devote approximately 15-20 hours per week to this commitment; if you are taking classes, the weekly time commitment is recommended to not exceed 29 hours, according to the University’s student employment policy

Location

  • This position is hybrid, partial remote, and partial on-site. At least half of your hours need to be in-person in the DPSS Administrative Office on the Ann Arbor campus

Job Requirements

The essential functions of this position include:

  • traveling to and from various areas of campus and Ann Arbor

  • remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time

  • routinely moving items weighing up to 25 pounds within the building and across campus for various event needs

  • frequent communication and exchange of information with the U-M community

Duration of Internship

Required Qualifications

  • An enrolled graduate or undergraduate student

  • A student who is interested in how organizations can maximize success

  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple projects at once

Compensation

  • A graduate student will earn $20.00 per hour for approved time worked on a bi-weekly basis, and an undergraduate student will earn $18.00 per hour
