Job Summary

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design is looking for a motivated and skilled individual to join Stamps Gallery’s team as an Installation Assistant. This is a temporary part-time position where you will work on exhibition changeovers and preparation that last from two to six weeks all year round. The Installation Assistant will report to the Exhibition Coordinator Preparator, and Stamps Gallery Director. You will assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, following best practices.

This job is onsite at the Stamps Gallery, 201 S. Division St., Ann Arbor, MI.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, install and de-install objects of all media (2D, 3D, new media, and installations) for exhibition
  • Crate, pack, and unpack art for storage, transportation, and exhibitions
  • Help with transportation and storage of artwork before the installation and follow de-installation
  • Install digital, multimedia, and other tech-intensive works and troubleshoot technical issues as they arise
  • Execute assigned projects, create a plan and implement
  • Fabricate and construct mounts and conduct minor cleaning
  • Assist with special projects and events
Educational Value

Students in this role will gain hands-on experience with museum and gallery operations, including art handling, exhibition installation and de-installation, and working with a wide range of materials and media. They will build practical skills using tools, fabrication techniques, and basic construction, while also strengthening their problem-solving abilities through real-time troubleshooting. This position offers meaningful exposure to exhibition design and professional museum practices in a collaborative, team-based environment.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience physically handling artwork in a variety of media from delicate works on paper to large-scale sculptures and installations made of fabric to industrial materials
  • demonstrated knowledge of techniques used in exhibition preparation
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and exhibition design plans.
  • Working knowledge of small tools, carpentry and woodworking, painting walls, hanging two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks, and basic construction.
  • Awareness of, and ability to research materials and display techniques as needed
  • Experience with Photoshop and digital databases
Hourly Rate $17.00/hour
Hours 25.5 hours per week
