Student Assistant – Computer & Video Game Archive (CVGA)
Spring / Summer 2026

 

The Computer & Video Game Archive (CVGA) is seeking one Student Assistant to support the daily operations of the archive during the Spring / Summer 2026 term.

 

Availability

Here are the current available shifts (subject to change - see our hours of operation below):

  • Wednesdays: 11:45 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Thursdays: 11:45 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Fridays: 11:45 AM – 3:00 PM

    • (A background related to video games, technology, or library science is helpful but not required)
  3. Confirm that you are able to work the required shifts listed above

Please note: Preference will be given to students with work-study awards for this term and/or Fall 2026.

Tuesday May 5 –  Friday August 14, 2026

  • Tuesday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
  • Wednesday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
  • Thursday: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
  • Friday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM

 

Closures:

  • Friday, June 19 (Juneteenth)
  • Friday, July 3 (Independence Day Observed)
  • Thursday, July 16 & Friday, July 17 (Ann Arbor Art Fair)

 

Educational Value

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an academic library setting, specifically within a special collection. You will:

  • Learn the inner workings of a library special collection
  • Develop skills in restoring both modern and vintage computers and consoles
  • Enhance your knowledge of the video game and media industry
Job Requirements

Position Overview

This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a wide range of video games, consoles, and library services in a dynamic and engaging environment.


Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting visitors with questions and circulating games
  • Test and maintain donated games and equipment to ensure functionality and long-term preservation
  • Troubleshoot and provide basic technical support for gaming systems, including older consoles and equipment
  • Support class sessions held in the CVGA, including setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Strong customer service skills
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to represent and support the CVGA’s mission
  • Ability to communicate with larger groups (e.g., assisting with tours or class visits)
  • Strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work-study eligibility (highly preferred)
  • Previous experience in a customer-facing role is a plus
Hourly Rate $16.00/hour
Hours 8.0 to 12.0 hours per week
